In the fifth chapter I have given many bibliographical details. This is due to the fact that the materials are widely scattered. A collective volume containing all the old ballads and songs, quoted. Mr. Daniel said to me, that I had given too' many references throughout. I admit I have given many. But they are not superfluous. References, generally speaking, are of two kinds. The one sort serves to Shuffle Off the shoulder of the writer the responsibility of his assertion.
