On this difficult point we cannot do better than adopt these words of Christ, and maintain, that because all things that the Father hath are Christ's, therefore the Holy Spirit proceedeth from the Son, as he does from the Father".

Q. Prove that the Holy Ghost is in operations distinguishable from, but in essence and attributes one and the same with the Father and the Son?

A. First, The arguments we advanced (p. 275 and 278.) to prove the personality of the Holy Ghost, prove also that he is in operations distinguishable from the Father; for they attributed to him actions, such as those of interceding with the Father, and fulfilling his will, which can be satisfactorily explained in no other sense. have further shown (p. 284.) his agency in the creation of the world, which is a divine operation far above the power of men or angels. To which we may add his ability to preserve what he has created".

contains this decisive assertion, "All these (gifts) worketh that one and the self same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will." "In fine," says Barrow, "there is no work, either of nature, or of providence, or of grace, so sublime or so difficult, which is not ascribed to the efficacy of the Holy Spirit: the which doth show his Sovereign authority, and his Almighty power; for surely by no more plain and cogent arguments, than by these,,can the omnipotence of the Supreme Deity itself be demonstrated "."

Secondly, That the Holy Ghost is in essence and attributes one and the same with the Father and the Son, may be proved from Scripture, for there, in more places than one, the names of God and Holy Ghost are used in such a way as to imply identity. The angel said to the blessed Virgin at our Lord's conception, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God"." Here the Holy Ghost must be God, otherwise Christ is not the Son of God, as our text asserts, and as has been else where proved. Again, "Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the

Holy Ghost," and immediately added, “Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God." The evident deduction from which passages must be, that the Holy Ghost is God, of the same substance with the Father and the Son. Compare also Matt. xii. with Luke xi. 20, and Acts ii. 22, with Rom. xv. 19o.

Q. Secondly, What is the office of the Holy Ghost?

A. With relation to God his office is to declare and to fulfil the Divine will and decrees.

With regard to man, his office is to put into our hearts good desires, and bring the same to good effect; to be our adviser, comforter, and sanctifier.
