But if, on the contrary, I am constrained to lament my time past, and say in the words of the prophet, "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and I am not saved," woe is me! Yet if this even be the case, still there is hope; for it is declared in Holy Writ, that "when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive: but in doing this, there should be no delay; for no person knows what a day may bring forth. May I then, duly considering the frailty and uncertainty of human life, begin now in earnest to prepare for eternity by prayer, faith, and obedience; for we all (says the prophet) do fade as a leaf."

My days on earth glide fast along,

And to an end draw near:

They hasten me along the road,

In judgment to appear.

The summer months are now all gone!

The leaves are blown away!

This truth reminds me yet once more,
That short must be my stay.

NOVEMBER.

Nov. 1. The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. He shall enter into peace. Isaiah lvii. 1, 2.

These all died in faith. Heb. xi. 13.

Reflect on the number of those who have already fought the good fight of faith, and have finished their course with joy.

Pray for grace to follow their good example, &c.

Nov. 2. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm xxiii. 1.

Our sufficiency is of God. 2 Cor. iii. 5.

Meditate on David's confidence in God.

Pray to him to support you in all your trials and difficulties.

Nov. 3.

Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. Isaiah viii. 13.

Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which can

not be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear for our God is a consuming fire. Heb. xii. 28, 29.

Consider with what reverence and awe you ought to approach God.

Pray for grace in order that you may serve Him acceptably.

Nov. 4. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly but the proud he knoweth afar off. Psalm cxxxviii. 6.

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John ii. 16.

Meditate on God's abhorrence of pride, &c. Pray for humility, and for an hatred of all worldly lusts.

Nov. 5. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. Psalm iv. 8.

Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. Luke xxiii. 46.

Consider by whose power you have been preserved hitherto.

Pray to your heavenly Father still for protection, &c.

Nov. 6. Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day. Deut. viii. 11.

Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 2 Peter iii. 17.

Meditate on the danger of falling from a state of grace, by associating with the wicked.

Pray for cautiousness, vigilance, &c.

Nov. 7. When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. Isaiah xli. 17, 18.

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. John vii. 37.

Meditate on God's goodness in providing so plentifully for the wants of the poor sinner, who thirsts after righteousness, &c.

Pray to Christ for a supply of living water, who is the exhaustless fountain.

Nov. 8. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. Psalm lxxxix. 1. Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. Col. iii. 23. Reflect on the Psalmist's gratitude. Pray with sincerity, &c.

Nov. 9. O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the Lord; say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously. Hosea xiv. 1, 2.

God commandeth all men every where to repent; because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained. Acts xvii.

30, 31.

Consider the necessity of repentance, &c.

Pray to God to forgive you your transgressions, and to receive you kindly for his Son Jesus Christ's sake.

Nov. 10. Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Psalm xxv. 4.

Quench not the Spirit. 1 Thess. v. 19.
