SECTION II,

VOL. II.

CONCERNING

AND

SECTION II.

HAVING ventured to give fuch full scope 569. to philofophical enquiry, and to the illuftration to be deduced from thence, with regard to the celebrated paffage in the Epiftle of St. Peter; I cannot now finally omit observing, that there is ftill another moft remarkable paffage in Holy Scripture, which feems fo manifeftly to have an important allufion to the real configuration of the earth, even when examined with every allowance poffible, and to be confirmed by fuch a variety of different expreffions and oblique references to it in various other parts of Holy Writ; that although we ought not too haftily to form conclufions therefrom concerning the exact structure of our globe, or concerning the ftate of any departed spirits; yet it ought not to be paffed by entirely unnoticed, and without confideration; whilst we are endeavouring to apprehend philofophically what is written in the Word of God.

The paffage is this, as it ftands in the Sep

tuagint :

Pfalm lxiii. ver. 10.

Αὐτοὶ δὲ εἰς μάτην ἐζήτησαν τὴν ψυχήν

ua' Εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὰ κατώτατα τῆς γῆς.

And be thus rendered literally:
may

And thefe have fought my life in vain ; They hall go into THE VERY LOWER PARTS of the earth.

Our verfion, in the Book of Common Prayer, has it, ver. 10.

Thefe alfo that feek the hurt of my foul: they shall go UNDER the earth.

Or, as it is in the tranflation in the Bible, ftill more ftrongly :

But those that feek my foul to deftroy it, fhall

INTO THE LOWER PARTS OF THE EARTH.
