Observe, that the Cyclops repeats the very words of Ulyffes, and the defcription which he had given. of himself; that the curfes may the more furely overtake him. He curfeth him, verbis conceptis, in due form and manner; which the Commentators have overlooked.

ατάρ αυτὸς ἀκιέμεν αικ' ἐθέλησα.

Δησάντων σ ̓ ἐν νηΐ θοῇ

Distinguish thus:

ἀκυέμεν αικ ̓ ἐθέληθα,

Δησάντων.

Ulyffes, intending to tell Eumæus a thumping lie, begins his ftory with faying that he is a Cretian:

Ἐκ μεν Κρητάων γένος ἔυχομαι ευρείαων.

To fay that the Poet intended this as a fneer upon the Cretians, who were always liars, is, perhaps a falfe refinement;-and perhaps is not fo. See Epift. ad Tit. c. 1. v. 12.

Facile extendit novo in clavo chordam.

It fhould rather be—κην ἐπὶ κέλλοπι, χορδήν. Νοvam chordam.

I have observed in Homer a defect, and an inaccuracy, which, I think, hath escaped the notice of all his Commentators and Examiners. It is this:

He often introduceth his heroes acting and fighting, after they had received wounds, which would not admit of fuch efforts, and such violent exercife; and he forgets to introduce fome Deity ex machind to heal them. I except therefore Æneas and Hector, and thofe who are supposed to have recòvered their ftrength by divine affiftance. But, Sarpedon is active in the war; Ulyffes wrestles with Ajax, and conquers in the race; Diomede fights with Ajax; Teucer shoots at the mark ;-who all had received wounds; and yet, as Homer well obferves, a wounded man cannot fight: II. E. 63.

— γὰρ πως βεβλημένον ἐσι μαχεθαί. See Ilias, E. 660. e. 324. A. 368, 434. II. 426. 7.-09, 755, 812, 859.

JOSEPHUS, I believe, looked upon the History

Thus, P. 5. he says,

of the Fall as an Allegory. Thus, P.

Τὰ μὲν αινιττομένα το νομοθέτα δεξιώς, τὰ δὲ

αλληγορώντος.

nonnulla feite quidem innuente Legiflatore,

alia autem exprimente allegoricè.

He promised to write a book upon the facred Allegories. Either however he did not compofe it, or it is loft, by good luck for him; for it would certainly have leffened his reputation.

Here Jofephus inferts many things, which are not to be found in the Scriptures.

P. 35. 1. 18.

He fays of Lot's wife, is a dñão μélébrer isephna Saulny.

In ftatuam falis converfa eft: eam fiquidem vidi, &c. `

That this Pillar retained an human form, is affirmed

affirmed neither by Mofes, nor by Jofephus. Jofephus might fee a ftone; and the inhabitants might have a tradition that it was Lot's wife.

P. 35. Í. 26.

—Пpovonσaσs dabei prævidentes clam fieri poffe. It fhould be, cùm præcaviffent fibi, ut Patrem fallerent: namely, by inebriation; which Jofephus diffembles, and paffes over.

P. 41. 1. 12.

- Καλαλιπώνὰς σύνολας, κατὰ μόνο 15 παιδὸς παρα γίνεται εἰς τὸ ὄρος.

Relictis qui fecum erant, cum folo puero advenit
It fhould be μετὰ μόνο.

ad montem.

In relating the ftory of Abraham's defign to facrifice his fon, he adds many things, which are ingenious and elegant; but of his own invention.

P. 49.

Mentioning the

Bleffing which Ifaac gave to Jacob, as thinking him to be Efau, he omits the moft material part; which was, Be Lord over thy brethren, &c. Gen. xxv11. 29.
