of the Substance of his Mother, he is therefore called Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

By his being born of a Virgin, feveral ancient Prophecies made to the Jews concerning their Meffiah were fulfilled in him; and by his being born of the Virgin Mary in particular, many others were likewife accomplished, which declared that the Meffiah must be of the Seed of Abraham, and of the House and Lineage of David.-And in this Article we therefore declare our Belief, that our bleffed Lord was born in fuch Manner, and of fuch a Perfon, as the Spirit of God long fince foretold of him; and that therefore he appeared by all these Particulars to be the Saviour who was appointed by the determinate Counsel and Foreknowledge of God, to be a Light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the Glory of his People Ifrael. -And from our Belief of his having fulfilled the Prophecies, in his wonderful Conception and Birth, and in the Person of his Bleffed Mother, upon his Entrance into the World; we next proceed to fhew that he did likewise as punctually fulfil those which related to the Manner in which, as Man, he fhould be obliged to leave it.—For

The fourth Article is, Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried; be defcended into Hell.

The

The Spirit of Chrift, fays St. Peter, 1 Pet.i. 11. which was in the Prophets, did testify before-hand the Sufferings of Chrift; and thofe things, which were fo long foretold, were in him fully accomplished.-He was, according to the Prophet Isaiah, to be a Man of Sorrows, and acquainted with Grief; and in Proof of it his whole State of Humiliation, from his Birth to his Death, was but one continued Scene of Suffering.--He was all along defpiled and rejected of Men, and he had not where to lay his Head.-And when what is here particularly called his Suffering, and by Divines generally his Paffion, began, never was any Sorrow like unto his Sorrow.-He underwent agonizing Pains in the Garden; he was betrayed by one, and forfaken by all his Difciples; was falfely accufed by the Jews, and infulted, mocked, buffeted, and fpit upon by the common Soldiers; was condemned, tho' innocent, by his felf-condemned Judge; and after the most bitter Pains of Body, and Anguifh of Soul, expired on a Crofs.

}

Thus did the Bleffed Jefus most eminently fuffer; and it was neceffary for him to undergo all this, to appease the Wrath of our of fended God.-The Father had from the Beginning determined, that without shedding of Blood, or fuffering of Death, the Sins of Men fhould not be forgiven, their Punishment abated, or their Happiness secured.——And therefore what he before ordained, his Eternal

Son

Son bath fo fulfilled.—And herein confists both the Satisfaction of Chrift, and his Redemption. -His Satisfaction, in that he has hereby fatif fied the Juftice of God, vindicated the Honour of his broken Laws, and his Dignity as the Author of those Laws, by doing his Will as he himself required. And his Redemption, in that we are redeemed from the Guilt, and Punishment, and the Dominion of Sin, by the precious Blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without Spot and without Blemish.-For, as our Church fully and clearly expreffes it in her Liturgy, By his own Oblation of himself once offered on the Cross, our Bleffed Lord made a full, perfect, and fufficient Sacrifice, Oblation, and Satisfaction for the Sins of the whole World.-So that there is now no Condemnation to them that are in Chrift Jefus, who walk not after the Flesh, but after the Spirit.

And if then there be now no Condemnation to them that are in Chrift Jefus; that is, if our Lord at once paid a full Ransom for them by the Sacrifice of himself, what becomes of the Popish Doctrines of the Sacrifice and Propitiation of the Mafs, and all the Opinions and Practices which are fupported by it? They are furely, as our Church expreffes it, blafphemous Fables, and dangerous Deceits.-They are Fables, because neither founded on Reason nor Scripture, but contrary to both.—They are blafphemous, because they derogate from the Power and Efficacy of Chrift's Satisfaction on

the Cross; for if they are necessary, that cannot have been fufficient: and to teach even that they are profitable, is fo far blafpheming him, as it implies that what he has done can receive any Addition from thence.-They are Deceits, because they are impofed upon the World as neceffary and important Truths, tho' they have no Foundation at all, either in Reafon or Revelation.-And they are dangerous, because they tend to induce Men to trust their Souls, as well as Estates upon them, tho' built on no Authority but that of fallible Men, who have Affurance enough to lay claim to Infallibility. By these Maffes, Men are taught to purchase Deliverance from imaginary Pains in a purgatorial State, and are enfnared to hazard their Souls by a carelefs and wicked Life, by relying on the Hopes they are required to have, that by these Maffes Satisfaction may be made for their Sins, even after they are dead.

We mention the Perfon of Pontius Pilate, to fignify the Time when our Lord fuffered, 'which was, when this Pilate was Procurator. of Judæa; and this is very proper and neceffary, because by his fuffering at that Time, and under fuch a Governor, feveral Prophecies were fulfilled in him.. Daniel's Prophecy (ix. 24) of Seventy Weeks of Years, or 490 Years from Ezra's going up from Babylon to Jerufalem, to the Death of the Meffiah, who was to finish the Tranfgreffion, and to make an end of Sins, was by this Means punctually accomplished.

complished.-And by our Lord's fuffering under a Roman Governor was verified his own Prophecy, that he should be delivered to the Gentiles, to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him, Matt. xx. 19.

The Manner of his fuffering by being crucified is alfo added, to fhew that in him was accomplished what the Prophets had typified and foretold, both of the Painfulness and the Ignominy of his Death.-By being crucified the Son of Man was lifted up, as the Serpent in the Wilderness had been lifted up, John iii. 14. By this Means he fuffered the Punishment of a common Malefactor, and was numbered with the Tranfgreffors, Ifai. liii. 12. and by this Means his Executioners pierced his Hands and his Feet; and he was literally made a Curfe for us, in as much as the Law pronounces, Curfed is every one that hangeth on a Tree, Deut. xxi. 23.

We add, that he was dead as well as crucified; because not only his being affixed to a Crofs (which he might have been, and not have been killed) but his Death was neceffary for the Expiation of our Guilt.-The Law, that without hedding of Blood there fhould be no Remiffion, means, without fo fhedding the Blood of the Animal as to kill it; and therefore we add, that our Lord was not only fixed to a Cross, but actually expired upon it; made bis Soul an Offering for Sin there; and there gave his Life a Ransom for many. Matt. xx.
