I love Thy Church, O God;
Her walls before Thee stand,
Dear as the apple of Thine eye,
And
graven on Thy hand.

For her my tears shall fall;

For her my prayers ascend;
To her my cares and toils be given,
Till toils and cares shall end.

Beyond my highest joy

I prize her heavenly ways,

Her sweet communion, solemn vows,
Her hymns of love and praise.

Jesus, Thou Friend divine,

Our Saviour and our King,
Thy hand from every snare and foe
Shall great deliverance bring.

Sure as Thy truth shall last,
To Sion shall be given

The brightest glories earth can yield,

And brighter bliss of heaven.

"That they all may be one."

197 ONE sole baptismal sign,
One Lord, below, above,
One faith, one hope divine,

One only watchword-Love:
From different temples though it rise,
One song ascendeth to the skies.

Amen.

Our sacrifice is one,

One Priest before the throne,
The slain, the risen Son,

Redeemer, Lord alone!

And sighs from contrite hearts that spring
Our chief, our choicest offering.

Head of Thy Church beneath,
The Catholic, the true,
On all her members breathe,

Her broken frame renew!

Then shall Thy perfect will be done,
When Christians love and live as one.

Amen.

"Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner-stone."

202 THE Church's one foundation

Is Jesus Christ her Lord;

She is His new creation

By water and the word:

From heaven He came and sought her

To be His holy bride;

With His own Blood He bought her,

And for her life He died.

Elect from every nation,

Yet one o'er all the earth,

Her charter of salvation

One Lord, one faith, one birth;

One holy name she blesses,

Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder,
Men see her sore opprest,
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distrest;

Yet saints their watch are keeping,
Their cry goes up, "How long?
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song.

'Mid toil and tribulation,
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace for evermore;
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won:
O happy ones and holy!

Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly,

On high may dwell with Thee. Amen.

"Jesus said unto them, I am the Bread of Life." 207 BREAD of the world, in mercy broken, Wine of the soul, in mercy shed,

66

By Whom the words of life were spoken,
And in Whose death our sins are dead;
Look on the heart by sorrow broken,
Look on the tears by sinners shed;
And be Thy feast to us the token
That by Thy grace our souls are fed.

Amen.

Whoso eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood hath eternal life."

209 BREAD of Heaven, on Thee we feed,
For Thy Flesh is meat indeed:
Ever may our souls be fed

With this true and living Bread;
Day by day with strength supplied,
Through the life of Him Who died.

Vine of heaven, Thy Blood supplies
This blest cup of sacrifice;

Lord, Thy Wounds our healing give,
To Thy Cross we look and live:

Jesus, may we ever be

Grafted, rooted, built in Thee. Amen.

"He took them up in His arms, put His hands upon them, and blessed them."

213 SAVIOUR, Who Thy flock art feeding, With the shepherd's kindest care,

·་

All the feeble gently leading,
While the lambs Thy bosom share;
Now, these little ones receiving,
Fold them in Thy gracious arm;
There, we know, Thy word believing,
Only there secure from harm.

Never from thy pasture roving,
Let them be the lion's prey;
Let Thy tenderness, so loving,

Keep them all life's dangerous way.

Then, within Thy fold eternal,

Let them find a resting-place;
Feed in pastures ever vernal,

Drink the rivers of Thy grace. Amen.

That he may please Him Who hath chosen him to be a soldier."

214 IN token that thou shalt not fear
Christ crucified to own,

We print the cross upon thee here,
And stamp thee His alone.

In token that thou shalt not blush
To glory in His Name,
We blazon here upon thy front,
His glory and His shame.

In token that thou shalt not flinch
Christ's quarrel to maintain,
