WATCHFULNESS-WAR.

house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. [Matth. xxiv. 42-44.

Watch ye therefore; for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning : lest coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you, I say unto all, Watch. [Mark, xiii. 35-37.

And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

[Rom. xiii. 11-14. Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. [1 Cor. xvi. 13. But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly, that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that be drunken, are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the, day, be sober, put. ting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet the hope of salvation. [1 Thes. v. 1-8.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour, [1 Pet. v. 8.

WAR.

If ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the

trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.

[Numb. x. 9.

WICKEDNESS.

Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him. [Isai. iii. 11. Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered. [Prov. xi. 21.

The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and bles. seth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth. The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God God is not in all his thoughts. His ways are always grievous: thy judgments are far above out of his sight as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing, and deceit, and fraud; under his tongue is mischief and vanity. He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages : in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor when he draweth him into his net. He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones. He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it. [P8. x. 2-11.

The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked, and him that loveth violence, his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup. [Ps. xi. 5, 6.

The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitations of the just. [Prov. iii. 33. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, nnless they cause some to fall. For they eat the bread of

[Prov. iv. 14-19. The memory of the just is blessed but the name of the wicked shall rot. [Prov. X. 7.

WIDOWS AND ORPHANS.

Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry: and my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

[Exod. xxii. 22-24. Judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress. [Ps. X. 18.

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. [Ps. lxviii. 5.

The Lord preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

[Ps. cxlvi. 9. preserve them [Jer. xlix. 11. mercy. [Hosea, xiv. 3. Learn to do well: seek judgment, relieve the oppressed; judge the fatherless; plead for the widow. [Isai. i. 17.

Leave thy fatherless children, I will alive; and let thy widows trust in me. In thee, Oh God! the fatherless findeth

WISDOM.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. [Prov. i. 7. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels. [Prov. i. 5.

For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. When wisdom entereth into thine

heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee. [Prov. ii. 6-11.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding: for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her; and happy is every one that retaineth her. The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: so shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. [Prov. iii. 13-24.

The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools. [Prov. iii. 35.

Get wisdom, get understanding; forget it not: neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. [Prov. iv. 5-13.

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I

have mingled. Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

[Prov. ix. 1, 4-9. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishnes with God: for it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. [1 Cor. iii. 18, 19.

Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. [1 Cor. viii. 1, 2. Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. [Matth. x. 16.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not: and it shall be given him. [James, i. 5.

God giveth to a man that is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather, and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit. [Eccl. ii. 26. I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

[Luke, xxi. 15. Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish. [Prov. xii, 1.

A wise son heareth his fathers instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. [Prov. xiii. 1, 14, 20.

For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giv eth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. [Eccl. ii. 26.

A wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgement; because to every purpose there is both time and
