THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

99

5. Thou shalt not bow down thy-self to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jea-lous God, vi-sit-ing the in-i-qui-ty of the fa-thers up-on the chil-dren un-to the third and fourth ra-tion of them that hate me;

6. And show-ing mer-cy un-to thou-sands of them that love me, and keep my com-mand-ments.

7. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guilt-less that ta-keth his name in vain.

8. Re-mem-ber the sab-bath day, to keep it ho-ly. 9. Six days shalt thou la-bour, and do all thy work: 10. But the se-venth day is the sab-bath of the LORD thy God in it thou shalt not do a-ny work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daugh-ter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-ser-vant, nor thy cat-tle, nor the stran-ger that is with-in thy gates:

11. For in six days the LORD made hea-ven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rest-ed the se-venth day: where-fore the LORD bless-ed the sab-bath day, and hal-low-ed it.

12. Hon-our thy fa-ther and thy mo-ther; that thy days may be long up-on the land which the LORD thy God giv-eth thee.

13. Thou shalt not kill.

14. Thou shalt not com-mit a-dul-te-ry.

15. Thou shalt not steal.

16. Thou shalt not bear false wit-ness a-gainst thy neigh-bour.

17. Thou shalt not co-vet thy neigh-bour's house, thou shalt not co-vet thy neigh-bour's wife, nor his man-ser-vant, nor his maid-ser-vant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor a-ny-thing that is thy neighbour's.

BREAD FROM HEAVEN IS GIVEN.

LESSON III.

BREAD FROM HEAVEN IS GIVEN.

Exodus, Chap. XVI.-2. And they took their jour-ney from E-lim and came in-to the wil-derness of Sin. And the whole con-gre-ga-tion of the chil-dren of Is-ra-el mur-mur-ed a-gainst Mo-ses and Aa-ron in the wil-der-ness.

3. And they said, Would to GOD we had di-ed by the hand of the LORD in the land of E-gypt; for ye have brought us forth in-to this wil-der-ness to kill us with hun-ger.

11. And the LORD spake un-to Mo-ses say-ing, I have heard the mur-mur-ings of the chil-dren of Is-ra-el: speak unto them, saying, At e-ven-ing ye shall eat flesh, and in the morn-ing ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.

13. And it came to pass, at e-ven-ing, that quails came up and cov-er-ed the camp, and in the morning the dew lay round a-bout the host.

14. And when the dew that lay was gone up, be-hold, up-on the face of the wil-der-ness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar-frost on the ground.

15. And when the chil-dren of Is-ra-el saw it, they said one to an-o-ther, It is man-na, for they wist not what it was. And Mo-ses said, This is the bread which the LORD hath giv-en you to eat.

26. And Mo-ses said, Six days shall ye ga-ther it, but on the sev-enth day, which is the Sab-bath, on it there shall be none.

27. And it came to pass, that on the sixth day

they ga-ther-ed twice as much bread, two o-mers for one man.

28. And the LORD said un-to Mo-ses, How long re-fuse ye to keep my com-mand-ments and my laws?

29. See, for that the LORD hath giv-en you the Sab-bath, there-fore he giv-eth you on the sixth day the bread of two days. A-bide ye ev-e-ry man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the sev-enth day.

30. So the peo-ple rest-ed on the seventh day.

LESSON IV.

MIRACULOUS GIFT OF WATER.

Numbers, Chap. XX.-1. Then came the children of Is-ra-el in-to the des-ert of Zin, and there was no wa-ter for the con-gre-ga-tion; and they gath-er-ed them-selves to-geth-er a-gainst Mo-ses and a-gainst Aa-ron.

3. And the peo-ple chode with Mo-ses, say-ing, Would GOD that we had di-ed when our breth-ren di-ed be-fore the LORD.

4 and 5. Why have ye brought us in-to this wilder-ness? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pom-e-gran-ates, nei-ther is there wa-ter to drink.

6. And Mo-ses and Aa-ron went from the pres-ence of the as-sem-bly, un-to the door of the tab-er-na-cle of the con-gre-ga-tion, and they fell upon their fa-ces, and the glo-ry of the LORD ap-pear-ed un-to them.

7 and 8. And the LORD spake un-to Mo-ses,

say-ing, Take the rod, and gath-er thou the as-sembly to-geth-er, thou and Aa-ron thy bro-ther; and speak ye un-to the rock be-fore their eyes, and it shall give forth its wa-ter.

9. And Mo-ses took the rod from be-fore the LORD as he com-mand-ed him, and Mo-ses and Aa-ron gath-er-ed the con-gre-ga-tion to-geth-er be-fore the rock, and he said un-to them, Hear now, ye re-bels! must we fetch you wa-ter out of this rock ?

11. And Mo-ses lift-ed up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice; and the wa-ter came out a-bun-dant-ly, and the con-gre-ga-tion drank, and their beasts al-so.

LESSON V.

THE PLAGUE OF FIERY SERPENTS.

Numbers, Chap. XXI.-4. And they jour-ney-ed from mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to com-pass the land of E-dom; and the soul of the peo-ple was much dis-cou-ra-ged be-cause of the way.

5. And the peo-ple spake a-gainst GOD, and a-gainst Mo-ses, Where-fore have ye brought us up out of E-gypt, to die in the wil-der-ness? for there is no bread, neither is there any wa-ter; and our soul loath-eth this light bread.

6. And the LORD sent fi-e-ry ser-pents a-mong the peo-ple, and they bit the peo-ple; and much people of Is-ra-el di-ed.

7. There-fore the peo-ple came to Mo-ses and said, We have sin-ned, for we have spo-ken a-gainst

the LORD and a-gainst thee; pray un-to the LORD that he take a-way the ser-pents from us. And Mo-ses pray-ed for the peo-ple.

8. And the LORD said unto Mo-ses, Make thee a fi-e-ry ser-pent and set it up-on a pole, and it shall come to pass that ev-e-ry one that is bit-ten, when he look-eth upon it shall live.

9. And Mo-ses made a ser-pent of brass, and put it up-on a pole; and it came to pass, that if a ser-pent had bit-ten any man, when he be-held the ser-pent of brass he liv-ed.
