THE JUDGMENT day, a DAY OF TERROR TO THE

UNGODLY.

"And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the

earth, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth

to shake terribly the earth."-ISAIAH ii. 19.

MAN naturally is disposed to live absorbed in the pre-

sent time and in present interests, and to see neither the

past nor the future. Scripture brings both before us with

lively interest; and to those, who study it in faith, makes

them both seem infinitely greater than any thing now be-

fore our eyes. Is not this true of the things we are now

going to consider, if we give them a deserved attention?

The scene which the above words bring before us is the

state of the minds of men immediately before they are

called to the judgment-seat of Christ, just about the time

of his actual appearing in the clouds of heaven. We say

of the minds of men, because so it is declared in several

places; but it applies only to the wicked, the unbeliev-

ing, the unprepared. But how awful it is to reflect that

these should be foreseen to be so many-to be so im-

mense a proportion of the world that Scripture should

thus speak, "And then shall appear the sign of the Son

of man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the

earth mourn!" Shall we be among those tribes, or

among that little flock of true believers who will lift up
