As I wrote the above lines, or at least just as I was looking the data, a beautiful schooner yacht sailed into the bay of Gloucester and with a gentle sweep came about and dropped her anchor behind the breakwater, safe mooring in all kinds of weather. On board was Mr. Richard Trimble, Secretary of the United States Steel Corporation, a billion dollar grouping of great interests. The old timer will remember this party as a member of the Teschemacher & DeBillier Cattle Company. He went to Cheyenne in 1882, spent that winter on the head of Cottonwood with Arthur Teschemacher and DeBillier. The log hut, a huge fireplace, the optimism of youth, plenty of grub and an endless amount of wood, helped them to survive one of the coldest winters on record. For days they could not ride. They got their baptism of fire on the above creek. In 1887 he left Wyoming a poorer and wiser man, but rose to be second ranking officer in the above corporation. (He died in 1923.) By his side sat Mr. Henry G. Hay (since dead), late President of the Stock Growers National Bank of Cheyenne, Wyo., then acting Treasurer of the "Steel." He also came through the fire as chief owner in Whipple & Hay, but that is a memory and we will not go deeper. Most of the names on the above list have passed into history. At Cheyenne you would meet J. M. Carey, [died 1924] judge, governor, senator, ranchman, capitalist, a man who has devoted much of his life to public work; R. S. Van Tassell and Luke Voorhees. Outside Cheyenne you will run against many an old timer. They are scattered far and wide. Henry A. Blair is financially and socially a leading figure in Chicago, more especially in traction matters. Sir Horace Plunkett leads great reforms in Ireland and still has interests in Wyoming. Senator Warren is still working vigorously in Washington, D. C., heavily interested in sheep and other interests in Wyoming. Occasionally 'you will meet Hi Kelly, pioneer of the Plains [died 1924]. A few months ago, I met John Kuykendall at a friend's house with his wife who was a daughter of Zach Thomasson, one of the early superintendents of the Swan Company. Charlie Coffee is at Chadron, very active the last time I saw him. Henry Weare, old friend and neighbor, is still at Spearfish, but the line is thinning out. Instead of thick tanglewood there is only a tree here and there. |
