My LORD, S the Piece to which I here take the Liberty to beg your LORDSHIP'S Patronage, was both Fatherless and Diftreffed, it has long ftruggled to make its Way into the World; World; but having at last found Countenance from fome Perfons of high Rank and diftinguished Merit, if it fhould also meet with the Approbation of one of your LORDSHIP's most admired Tafte in every thing that is esteemed polite, I should think no higher Honour could be done to that, or to, My LORD, Your LORDSHIP'S moft Obedient and Obliged Humble Servant, M. WHINCOP. PREFACE. T may not be improper to take notice, that there have already appeared two Plays, of which Scanderbeg was the Hero; but, as there was very little Merit in either of them, they met with no Regard from the Town, and therefore need not prevent the Publication of a third, which we believe deferves a better Fate. The Hero of the first of thefe Plays, which was wrote by an Actor, has nothing to fhew him to be Scanderbeg but his Name. His other, and real Name of Caftriot, is not once mentioned throughout the whole Play; nothing is faid of his Family, nor the unhappy Fortunes of all his Brothers; no Reason is given for his being at the Court of the Grand Signor; none for the Grand Signor's Kindness to |
