*The above is the celebrated song from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister.' The hero of the novel meets with a company of strolling players in Germany, and becomes exceedingly interested in a child, who is forced to go through with difficult and painful motions upon the slack rope.-He buys her of her cruel masters; and she becomes his constant attendant, and follows him as a father. It appears that the child had been stolen from Italy The only answer he could obtain to his inquiries about her birth and former life, were such vague and faint recollections as are expressed in this song.
