were applied. My healing was so complete that today I can walk as well as ever.

It says in the Bible (Ps. 92:1), "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High" and (Isa. 46:4) "Even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you." During the long time I have been a student of Christian Science, I have been privileged to have many experiences and proofs of the divine presence. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church. I also give thanks for the great privilege of class instruction. (Mrs.) ANNA FAHLDIECK Berlin, Germany

I was about seven years old when my mother first became interested in Christian Science. She was quickly healed of a chronic internal disorder of many years' standing by reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was healed of acidosis, which had plagued me all my childhood, and also of whooping cough. When I was twelve years old, I was attending a boarding school prior to taking an entrance examination for a school for the daughters of Christian Scientists. I was suddenly taken ill with what was eventually diagnosed as pneumonia and pleurisy, supposed to have resulted from tuberculosis. My mother was informed and at once called a Christian Science practitioner three hundred miles away, who gave me treatment.

In accordance with the laws of our country I received a medical examination. The physician first diagnosed scarlet fever and arranged for me to be admitted to an isolation hospital. A second opinion was that I had tuberculosis and should accordingly be moved to hospital for treatment. There was no bed available there, however, and my mother took on the job of nursing me at school because we had no home at the time.

Three days later a close friend offered us accommodation in her home, and I was moved there.

The practitioner wisely suggested that we have the help of a Christian Science nurse, and a nurse came the next day. I will never forget the deep sense of peace I felt when she arrived. All fear left me, and the improvement was almost immediate.

I must mention here my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for her wise provision in the Manual of The Mother Church for the office of Christian Science nurse. I am sure many will agree with me when I say that the practical and spiritual sense of harmony and calm they express in such full measure contributes much toward the healing work.

The physician was still attending me, but I was receiving no medication. By now my father had returned from abroad, and in spite of the obvious improvement in my condition he and the doctor insisted that I be moved to the tuberculosis ward of the hospital for a thorough examination and X rays.

I shall always be grateful for the wonderful love expressed by the Christian Science nurse. She knew that the healing was all but complete and saw the importance of supporting me until it was absolutely established. Within two days the healing was established as complete. This was proved by the X rays, which were negative. Shortly thereafter I took and passed the entrance exam for school. Three weeks from the day I first became ill, I was horseback riding and leading a normal life at boarding school.

It may be interesting to note that in meeting this situation with Christian Science we did not defy the laws of our country and were made more aware that God's law supersedes all other so-called law. As Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 135), "The miracle introduces no disorder, but unfolds the primal order, establishing the Science of God's unchangeable law."

During the years since this experience, I

have had many healings including impetigo, food poisoning, colds, influenza, concussion, and severe cuts, and have been protected from contagion and sea and air sickness during travels in different parts of the world.

I would also like to express my gratitude for class instruction. The blessings resulting from this step have been a hundredfold. The truly working knowledge of this wonderful Science enabled me to meet and master very quickly old problems and limitations, and thus be equipped to take advantage of the exceptional opportunities that unfolded in the way of a new job and environment.

For our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and her wisdom and unselfed love in establishing the organization and By-Laws contained in the Manual, as well as for the consecrated practitioners, nurses, and other workers in the Christian Science movement, I am more grateful than words can express. (Miss) CAROLYN HALES Godstone, Surrey, England

I am happy to endorse my daughter's testimony and to express gratitude for the valuable lesson learned in standing for Principle. While nursing my daughter at the school, I was able to overcome weariness and fear and to do all that was required of me by pondering Mrs. Eddy's statement in the Manual (Art. XVII, Sect. 1): "A Christian Scientist is not fatigued by prayer, by reading the Scriptures or the Christian Science textbook. Amusement or idleness is weariness. Truth and Love rest the weary and heavy laden.”

Before the arrival of the Christian Science nurse my daughter was semiconscious for long periods, and the thought came to me to sing and read hymns to her from the Christian Science Hymnal. I found that I could do this almost without ceasing, thus manning the bulwarks and keeping out thoughts of fear that tried to break in.

To the devoted practitioner and Christian Science nurse who supported us

throughout this experience, I am sincerely grateful.

For the privilege of class instruction and active church membership, which have opened up so many new views of God's love and omnipotent goodness, I am deeply grateful.

(Mrs.) MARJORIE K. GRAY

I am glad my mother introduced me to Christian Science at a tender age. Having known no other religion and recognizing the omnipotence of Truth in meeting all human needs, I am most grateful for God's gracious gift to mankind.

This remarkable discovery of the lost element of healing by Mrs. Eddy made its first real impression on me when, as a young man, I was working for an oil company in a small town. One of my duties as a laborer was to lift heavy piping onto a truck. While doing this work on a hot midsummer day, I became ill from fatigue and heatstroke. When I arrived at my home that evening, I was too exhausted to rest comfortably and sat in a rocking chair most of the night. My brother, who had recently begun the earnest study of Science, recommended that a Christian Science practitioner be called. My brother and I had been taught in a Christian Science Sunday School. We had accepted the basic truths of Christian Science to the extent that the need for drugs or medicine for prophylactic or therapeutic purposes was never considered. About twenty minutes after the call for aid was placed, I was asleep and slept restfully the remainder of the night. On waking the next morning I was completely well and was so impressed by this wonderful healing that I wanted to shout it to the whole world.

Since that time other beautiful healings have occurred, and I have known many instances of God's guidance, provision, and protection. One of these was the provision of a complete college education when no

funds were available. Another was the protection received during my training and overseas activities in the armed service during World War II. Others include the healings of virus infections, colds, embarrassments, loss, and many more.

One of my richest blessings is the guidance that led to marriage to a devoted student of Christian Science. How grateful we both are for the selfless practitioners, who are always available in our need, and for the Christian Science nurse who was in attendance at the births of our four children! I feel that the happiness we have in our marriage is due to the fact that we have put God first in our lives. A sum of money we received for a wedding present was invested in class instruction from a consecrated teacher of Christian Science. To me there is no more precious thing in life than to see God's loving care for His

children.

The building of a home when mortal mind said this was impossible is another experience I would like to share. This began when we were living in a small house and flood waters twice threatened to destroy our belongings. Because of my professional training it had long been one of my desires to design and build our own home, but the very possibility of this seemed so remote as to be almost foolish. The equity in our home at the time had been lost due to the floods, and we had few funds with which to plan such a project. We continued to pray, recognizing that God would show us the way. I prepared a complete set of house plans and took them to a builder for an estimate. The cost was out of reach for us. The way seemed dark, but we continued to listen for the right steps. The passage from Isaiah (65:21, 22) "And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of

their hands" was like a promise to us that God would show us what we needed to do.

Soon after this we found a beautiful lot on the edge of a pecan grove, and a method of purchasing it was worked out, as well as provision of a temporary spacious dwelling, which we acquired while our new home was under construction. This gave us the ample time needed to prepare new drawings for a larger and more spacious house plan. The entire transaction unfolded with no exchange of money, only ideas. Mrs. Eddy states in Miscellaneous Writings (p. 307), “God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies.

During the time of the floods and of the building of our home, I had been unemployed at two different times, and the construction market was at one of its lowest ebbs. In reviewing this experience I found it becoming plain to me that only God could have given us this clear light and understanding to go forward with the building in a time of darkness and seeming lack.

One day I visited a Christian Science Reading Room in order to pray quietly and listen to what I needed to do about employment. After studying the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson I reached out humbly to God and asked Him what I needed to do. I had explored all the avenues I could think of, and all sources seemed to be completely dry. When I finished my reading, the angel voice came to me saying, "Now go out and get a job." The force of this thought caused me to jump from my chair and led me to drive to a place of employment, where I started to work that very afternoon. After several months with this firm I was led to another position, which provided a more active and more productive type of work. After a few years with this firm I was made an associate and spent a total of six years there before establishing my own business.

Another experience for which I am grateful is the privilege of having been

elected First Reader of our branch church. What greater reward can there be than that of giving? CHARLES ROBERT SCRUGGS Tulsa, Oklahoma

Healing through prayer never leaves us where it found us. More important than the happy solution of a problem is the measure of spiritual regeneration we gain, which, indeed, is a necessary requisite for the successful working out of any problem. One of the most memorable experiences in a lifetime of blessings through the application of Christian Science was the healing of a relatively small physical problem. Several years ago a growth appeared in the corner of one eye. There was no pain, no obstruction of the vision. And so I accepted it, without protest, as a part of my eye. When I realized that it was disturbing my husband, and that others were beginning to notice the growth, I attacked the problem the same way in which I previously had worked out another more serious but less obvious growth. There was no change in the condition. One day I realized that I was attempting to apply a proven remedy or formula to the situation instead of praying for fresh inspiration and increased understanding of my relationship to God.

For several weeks a certain Bible passage had often come to mind. Each time I had dismissed it, perhaps believing its message too simple. Then one day I looked up the verse: "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" The command following was explicit: "Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye" (Luke 6:41, 42).

This was my answer. From that moment I began to watch my thinking, to resist the temptation to criticize, to find

fault, or nag. How often I caught myself doing the very thing for which I had criticized others! Within a week the growth fell from my eye, leaving only a small red spot, which disappeared before the day was over. The lesson remains.

My first healing was that of a birth defect. A shortened limb grew to its normal size before I was three months old. Possibly because of this outstanding healing my brother and I were permitted to attend a Christian Science Sunday School, although my father was a practicing druggist. Throughout our childhood we were kept under close medical supervision; however, our Sunday School teaching instilled in us for all time the irrefutable truth that God and God alone heals and that nothing is impossible to Him.

From college I embarked on a career in government that took me to various parts of the world. There were no Churches of Christ, Scientist, where I was stationed, nor, to my knowledge, any adherents of the teachings. My Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy gathered dust in my footlocker. But in spite of this outward sign of indifference, deep inside I knew that "my help cometh from the Lord" (Ps. 121:2).

During World War II, while living abroad, I was healed of amoebic dysentery and anemia after being bedridden for many months. Because of the severity of the condition I was flown from my station in Spain to a United States Military hospital in North Africa. At my request a Protestant chaplain brought a volunteer Christian Science Worker to my bedside. This young Air Force major consented to help me through prayer, and at my request obtained my release from the hos pital and from all medical treatment. When I returned to the States less than a month later, I was free from the disease and the anemic condition.

A few months later I joined The Mother Church. Within a few days after taking this step I noticed with great joy that a

fingernail, badly deformed by what had been diagnosed as an incurable fungus growth, had become perfectly normal. After my marriage I wavered in my reliance upon the teachings of Christian Science. I rarely attended church. Then I was told after a physical examination that an immediate operation for the removal of fibroid tumors was necessary. I was told by a very fine surgeon that even after this operation I should not hope to bear children. At this point my husband, who had never before evidenced any interest in a religion that I had almost ignored since our marriage, suggested that I call a practitioner. This I did, choosing from the directory in The Christian Science Journal a dedicated Christian Scientist, who later became my teacher. Three days later the tumors left my body painlessly. Their complete removal was confirmed on the fourth day by the physician who had planned to perform the operation.

I began to drink in Christian Science like one long athirst. Within six months I had joined a branch church and had class instruction, and within less than two years of the time of making my decision to turn wholeheartedly to Christian Science our first child was born.

I have had many healings-too many to describe in this one long overdue testimony. How can I ever thank God for His marvelous patience with one who had to be shown the way step by step by step? My gratitude is unbounded for having been born in this century of Christian Science

healing.

ings through the application of Christian Science. JOHN A. MADIGAN, JR.

I am happy to verify the healing of my daughter's leg, which was noticeably shorter than the other at birth. My mother, a student of Science since 1906, and now nearing the century mark, encouraged and supported me during that time. A practitioner several hundred miles away was called to help the child through prayer. The condition was healed within a short time and completely. Some years later, in a school contest, my daughter was awarded a certificate for physical excellence.

Our family has had many healings over the years. For all the help from practitioners and my own understanding of Christian Science, for class instruction, for the privilege of serving a local branch church and Sunday School, where my grandchildren are now enrolled, I am truly grateful.

(Mrs.) REBA CROW GREEN

From early childhood I had the privilege of attending the Christian Science Sunday School. Shortly after I was born, my parents took up the study of Christian Science. My mother had been given up by the doctors, and a friend of the family asked my parents if they would consider Christian Science treatment for my mother. It was agreed to, and the family turned completely to Christian Science. All medicine and material aids that were in the home were thrown out. My mother was quickly and permanently healed. From that time, Christian Science has met our every need.

A healing which took place in my experience some years ago challenges the generally accepted beliefs in regard to hay fever. I had suffered from hay fever in a mild form for two or three years. Christian Science treatment was given, but I would be relieved only to have it return. By this time it affected me not only in so-called
