Tranquebar.

The Rev. the Danish Miffionaries, in a Letter dated at Tranquebar, March 27, 1810, acknowledge the receipt of the long expected ftores and prefents for the year 1808, which had been detained in Bengal, and they were happy to find the ftationary in a better condition, than they expected. For thefe tokens of the Society's benevolence to them, and to their Miffion, they return moft humble thanks.

Adverting to the enquiry, relative to the Syrian Clergy, they also state their opinion, that an union with them is altogether impracticable,

Their Colleague Mr. John had loft his fight, but by the grace of God he was ftill able to preach, alternately, in the Portuguese and Malabar Churches; and to continue his correfpondence, by dictating the neceffary Letters. Mr. Cammerer officiated in the Danish Church, and alfo in the Malabar Congregation; and Mr. Schreyvogel had enabled himfelf, by ferious application to theological ftudies, originally commenced at Berlin, to render them effential fervice, in the Malabar and Portuguefe Churches and Schools.

In their Malabar Congregation, no difturbance had latterly occurred; and the difturbers of their peace had been brought to a fenfe of their improper conduct, and had fhewn their repentance, orally, and by Letters.

The monthly allowance from Government, of 200 Pagodas, having been found infufficient to fupport their Charity Schools, whilft they were deprived of remittan

ces from Denmark, and Germany, they had diminished the number of Children, in the Malabar Schools, but they retained the ufual number in the Portuguese School. They had, however, encreafed the number of Children, in the School fome years fince eftablished at Velipattam, near the Fort, and had began a new one, at Porrear. Obferving the great ufefulness of the English Language, among the Portuguese School Boys, they had alfo introduced it among the Female Portuguese Children, and had feen with pleafure their progrefs.

Their well informed and faithful fenior Catechift Savaryrayen, as acting Country Prieft, had been fent to vifit the Country Congregations, and had given them much fatisfaction by his reports.

They had been much gratified, by a vifit from Mr. Kolhoff, who had alfo attended their Congregations at Cumbagonam, Tirupatury, and Negapattam; and they had thereby had the opportunity of interefting conference with him, on the various and important affairs of their refpective Miffions, and on the means of preferving unity amongst themselves.

They had been apprized, that they might fhortly expect to receive the Society's ftores and prefents, for the preceding year. Printing paper, for new Editions of School-books, and Portuguefe and Tamulian New Teftaments, was much wanted, and they were anxious to be favoured with it annually. By the Tamulian School-books, the knowledge of the Chriftian Religion was not only forwarded amongft Chriftians, but alfo amongft Heathens, many of whom eagerly accepted them. The fame was alfo the cafe with the English books, with which they were favoured by the Society, which too had been very inftrumental in encreafing the defire to learn English.

They pray that God may reward their Benefactors, with his heavenly bleflings, for the benevolence, and

The ufual ftores and prefents of Books, Stationary, Printing Paper, and other articles of accommodation, together with the remittances, including a gratuity of £50 to each of the Miffionaries, and an additional gratuity of £50 to Mr. Pezold, in confideration of his pe culiar wants, have been granted this year, and permitted to be fent out, through the continued favour of the Honourable Eaft India Company, to whom the Society thus publickly return their HEARTY THANKS,

MISSION TO THE SCILLY ISLANDS.

The Rev. Meffrs. Evans, and Selby, continue in their respective stations; and on St. Agnes Inland, a new Church has been erected, for the better accommodation of the Inhabitants, by means of contributions from the Society, from the Honourable Corporation of the Trinity House, and from various individuals, whofe beneficence has been invited by the perfevering and zealous applica tions of Mr. Selby.

DIOCESAN AND DISTRICT COMMITTEES.

THE important measure, adopted last year, refpecting the formation of Diocefau and Diftriet Committees, for the more effectual accomplishment of the chief defigus of the Society, has been attended with a degree of fuccefs which calls for the devout thankfulness of all it's Members, and encourages the hope, that it's ufefulness will thereby be very confiderably extended. The Board feel it incumbent upon them to prefent to the Society at large a Report of the proceedings which have taken place in confequence of that measure. And that the progress which has been made towards the attainment of the end propofed may be more diftinctly perceived, they deem it expedient to re-print, as introductory to their Report, the firft feries of Refolutions which were adopted relative to the formation of fuch Committees.
