that they which are approved may be made manifest. But woe unto them through whom these offences come. 1 He that will love life, and see good days, let him peace, and ensue it. seek 2 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. 3 Can two walk together except they be agreed? * Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand. 5 If ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. * Whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. 'Blessed are the peace-makers, for they shall be called the children of God. But him that soweth discord among brethren, the Lord hateth. 8 JUSTICE. IN GENERAL. Thus saith the Lord, Execute ye judgment and righteousness. In all your labours let none iniquity be found in you. 2 He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in much; and he that is unjust in the least, is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 3 It is joy to the just to do judgment. To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. 5 If a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right; hath not oppressed any, hath spoiled none by violence, hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, and hath executed true judgment between man and man; he shall surely live, saith the Lord. God. * Let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. 7 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee. He that deviseth to do evil, shall be called a mischievous person. 9 Do no wrong, do no violence. Why do ye not rather take wrong than do wrong to your brethren? 10 To have respect of persons is not good; for, for a piece of bread that man will transgress. 11 He that doth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done. PARTICULAR KINDS OF INJUSTICE FORBID. 5 Murder. Thou shalt not kill. • Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made he man. 'Surely, saith God, the blood of your lives will I require. At the hand of every beast will I require it; and at the hand of man, at the hand of every man's brother, will I require the life of man. 8 If any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him and smite him mortally that he die; thine eye shall not pity him; but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from the land. Deut. xix. 6. sought not his harm; he is not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past. 1 If a man smite his servant, and he die under his hand, he shall be surely punished. 2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. 3 Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify against any person, to cause him to die. * Ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death. For blood it defileth the land; and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it. 5 Woe unto them that shed the blood of war in peace; and that condemn and kill the just, and he doth not resist them. * The Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful men; and they shall not live out half their days. "He that smiteth his father or his mother, Striking. shall be surely put to death. Thou shalt not commit adultery. 5 If a man committeth adultery with another man's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. If any man's wife hath gone aside to another, instead of her husband, she shall be a curse among her people. 7 Whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; he that doth it, destroyeth his own soul. A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man; therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance: he will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. • If a damsel that is a virgin, be betrothed Corrupting unto a husband, and a man find her and lie virgins. with her, they shall both of them die.
