SUMMARY

Our budget request for 1987 marginally meets the stockpile reuirements, and supports the priority safety, security and environental improvements. In terms of the waste program, we are on a ath to manage waste effectively within this program, and reach hat point where we will reduce, or at least not accumulate into ur storage inventory, any additional waste.

ENVIRONMENT, SAFETY AND HEALTH FUNDING

Admiral Foley asked me to address now for overall Defense Prorams some of the environmental activities and get those in the ecord, in terms of the budget request. I will do that with three rief slides of a few comments.

In terms of Gramm-Rudman-Hollings adjustment for fiscal year 1986, there was almost no adjustment in the environmental programs, and that is because we are under several compliance orders from States.

We are under threat of lawsuits from many States and the environmental conditions throughout the plants must be addressed, and they must be addressed in the context of this particular progression of law; things that we have to comply with.

Our newest plant is the plant built in Pinellas, Florida in the mid-1950s. We built plants that are not according to today's standards in terms of complying with the environmental laws, and with the State regulations, or State interpretations of some of those laws.
