day and night; and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth, then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them. Je. xxxiii. 25, 26. In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof, and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old. Am. ix. 11. In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David. And the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them. Zec. xii. 8. Behold, thou (Mary) shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. Lu. i. 31, 32. And (the Lord God) hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David. As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began. Lu. i. 69, 70. Hath not the Scriptures said, that Christ cometh of the seed of David (said some of the people)? and out of the town of Bethlehem where David was? John vii. 42. Therefore (David) being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, That of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit upon his throne he seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ. Ac. ii. 30, 31. And when he (God) had removed "him" ("Saul"), he raised up unto “them” ("Israel") David to be their king. To whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Of this man's seed hath God, according to his promise, raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus. Ac. xiii. 22, 23. Paul, separated unto the Gospel of God, concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David, according to the flesh, to all that be in Rome, &c. Ro. i. 1. 3. I Jesus have sent mine angel, to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David; and the bright and morning star. Re. xxii. 16. See chap. xxi. 9. and xxii. 42.

The son of Abraham.] In thee (said God to Abram) shall all families of the earth be blessed. Ge. xii. 3. In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. Ge. xxii. 18. Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him. Ge. xviii. 18. Unto thee and unto thy seed (said the Lord to Isaac) I will give all these countries, and I

will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father. In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. Ge. xxvi. 3-5. I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father (said the Lord to Jacob in his vision of the ladder); in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Ge. xxviii. 13, 14. The promise that he should be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. Ro. iv. 13. To Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, and to seeds, as of many, but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. Ga. iii. 16. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels, but he took on him the seed of Abraham. He. ii. 16. 2 Abraham begat Isaac, &c.] Sarah conceived and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac, being eight days old, as God had commanded him. Ge. xxi. 2-4. And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor; and they served other gods. And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac. Jos. xxiv. 2, 3. The sons of Abraham; Isaac and Ishmael. 1 Ch. i. 28. Look unto Abraham your father (ye that follow after righteousness), and unto Sarah that bare you; for I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him. Is. li. 2. (Judah) which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, &c. Lu. iii. 34.

And he (the Lord) gave him (Abraham) the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs. vii. 8. They are not all Israel which are of Israel; neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children; but in Isaac shall thy seed be called; that is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of promise are counted for the seed; for this is the word of promise; At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. Ro. ix. 6-9. Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. By faith

Abraham when he was tried offered up Isaac; and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son; of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called. He. xi. 11. 17, 18. Isaac begat Jacob.] After "that" ("after Esau was born") came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel, and his name was called Jacob. Ge. xxv. 26. And I gave unto Isaac (said God) Jacob and Esau. Jos. xxiv. 4. The sons of Isaac (were) Esau and Israel. 1 Ch. i. 34. Thou Israel art my servant Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. Is. xli. 8. Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the Lord; yet I loved Jacob, and I hated Esau. Mal. i. 2, 3. When Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac (for the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth), it was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. Ro. ix. 10-13.

And Jacob begat Judas, &c.] Leah conceived and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben. And she conceived again and bare a son, and she called his name Simeon. And she conceived again and bare a son, and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me; therefore was his name called Levi. And she conceived again and bare a son, and she said, Now will I praise the Lord, therefore she called his name Judah, and left bearing. Ge. xxix. 32-35. Bilhah conceived and bare Jacob a son, and Rachel said, God hath judged me; therefore called she his name Dan (i. e. judging). And Bilhah Rachel's maid conceived again and bare Jacob a second son, and Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister and have prevailed; and she called his name Naphtali. And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bare Jacob a son; and Leah said, A troop cometh; and she called his name Gad. And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bare Jacob a second son; and Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed; and she called his name Asher. And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived and bare Jacob the fifth son, and she called his name Issachar. And Leah conceived again and bare Jacob the sixth son, and she called his name Zebulun. 5-24. Then (if you, the Shechemites, be circumcised) will we give our daughters unto you (said the sons of Jacob), and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone. And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son; and the

young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter; and he was more honourable than all the house of his father. Ge. xxxiv. 16-19. These are the names of the children of Israel which came into Egypt; Jacob and his sons, &c. &c. Ge. xlvi. 8, &c. Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise; thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up; he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh come, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine: he washed his garments in wine and his clothes in the blood of grapes; his eyes shall be red with wine and his teeth white with milk. Ge. xlix. 8-12. Now these are the names of the children of Israel which came into Egypt; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls. Ex. i. 1-5. These are the sons of Israel; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher, &c. &c. 1 Ch. ii. 1, &c. the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright; for Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler ; but the birthright was Joseph's.) 1 Ch. v. 1, 2. See Lu. iii. 33, 34. He (the Lord) gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs. Ac. vii. 8. Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Re. vii. 5.

Now

3 Judas begat Phares.] It came to pass, in the time of her (Tamar's) travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. And it came to pass as he (Zarah) drew back his hand (on which the midwife bound a scarlet thread), that, behold, his brother came out; and she said, How hast thou broken forth? This breach be upon thee! Therefore his name was called Pharez (i. e. a breach). And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand, and his name was called Zarah (i. e. brightness). Ge. xxxviii. 27, 29, 30. The sons of Judah, Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zarah. Ge. xlvi. 12. And the sons of Judah, after their families, were of Shelah the family

Thamar.] And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. And Er Judah's firstborn was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord slew him. Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house till Shelah my son be grown, for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brother did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house. Ge. xxxviii. 6. 11. And it came to pass about three months after (Judah was deceived by Tamar as an Harlot) that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot, and also, behold she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth and let her be burnt: when she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man whose these are am I with child and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet and bracelets and staff. And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I, because I gave her not Shelah my son. Ge. xxxviii. 24, 25, 26.

And Phares begat Esrom.] The sons of Pharez were Hezron, and Hamul. Ge. xlvi. 12. And the sons of Pharez were, of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites. Nu. xxvi. 21. Now these are the generations of Pharez; Pharez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, and Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David. Ru. iv. 18-22. The sons of Pharez, Hezron and Hamul.1 Ch. ii. 5. The sons of Judah; Pharez, Hezron, and Carmi, and Hur, and Shobal. 1 Ch. iv. 1. (Boaz) which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson, which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda. Aram.] Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab. Ru. iv. 19. The sons of Hezron that were born unto him; Jerahmeel, and Ram, and Chelubai. 1 Ch. ii. 9.

4 Aminadab.] Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, Ram begat

Amminadab, and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah, and Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse. 1 Ch. ii. 10, 11, 12.

Naasson.] These are the names of the men that shall stand with you (said God to Moses); of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab. Nu. i. 7. Nahshon the son of Amminadab, shall be captain of the children of Judah. Nu. ii. 3. And he that offered his offering the first day (for the tabernacle and altar) was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah. And for a sacrifice of peaceofferings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs of the first year. This was the offering of Nahshon, the son of Amminadab. Nu. vii. 12. 17. In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah (in the order of march), according to their armies, and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab. Nu. x. 14. Jesse (in the genealogy of Christ) which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson. Lu. iii. 32.

5 Salmon.] Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed. Ru. iv. 21. Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse. 1 Ch. ii. 11, 12.

Rachab.] And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there. Jos. ii. 1. But Joshua had said unto the two men that had espied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her. And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had, and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive. Jos. vi. 22-25. By faith, the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. He. xi. 31. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way. Ja. ii. 25.

Booz.]

They" ("the sons of Naomi") took them wives of the women of Moab, the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And Ruth (after the death of her husband) said (to Naomi), Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee, for whither thou goest I will go;

And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat 6 Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; And Solomon 7

and where thou lodgest I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God; where thou diest will I die, and there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab; and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barleyharvest. Ru. i. 4. 16, 17. 22. See Ru. ii. 3, 4.

Obed.] Jesse (in the genealogy of Christ) which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson. Lu. iii. 32.

6 Jesse.] Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David. Ru. iv. 22. And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided me a king among his sons. And Samuel (doing that which the Lord spake) said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him, for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look on. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he; then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. 1 Sa. xvi. 1. 11, 12, 13. Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name was Jesse, and he had eight sons. And Saul said unto him (David), Whose son art thou? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite. 1 Sa. xvii. 12. 58. Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan (because David came not to the king's table), and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness. For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom: wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. 1 Sa. xx. 30, 31. All of you (said Saul to his servants) have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse. 1 Sa. xxii. 8. Now these be the last words of David, David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel said, The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. 2 Sa.

xxiii. 1, 2. Ozem (was) the sixth (son of Jesse), David the seventh. 1 Ch. ii. 15. The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended (contained in Ps. Ixxii.) Ps. lxxii. 20. There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. Is. xi. 1. And when "he" ("the Lord") had removed him (Saul), he raised up unto them David to be their king, to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus. Ac. xiii. 22, 23.

Solomon.] David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her, and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon, and the Lord loved him. And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name Jedidiah (i, e. beloved of the Lord), because of the Lord. 2 Sa. xii. 24, 25. These were born unto him (David) in Jerusalem, Shimea, Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four of Bath-shua, the daughter of Ammiel. 1 Ch. iii. 5. These are the names of his children which he had in Jerusalem, Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon. 1 Ch. xiv. 4. Of all my sons (said David), (for the Lord hath given me many sons), he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. 1 Ch. xxviii. 5.

Her that had been the wife of Urias.] David sent and enquired after the woman (whom he saw washing herself, and who was very beautiful to look upon). And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba the daughter of Eliam the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead (for David ordered Joab to set him in the foremost of the hottest battle), she mourned for her husband. And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and she bare him a son. 2 Sa. xi. 3. 26, 27. Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba, the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not. Go, and get thee unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? Behold, while yet thou talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words. And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber; and the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king. And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said,

begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; 8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram 9 begat Ozias; And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat

What wouldest thou? And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. Then king David answered and said, Even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, even so will I certainly do this day; then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord the king live for ever. 1 Ki. i. 11. 13, 14—17. 28–31. For David's sake did the Lord his God give him (Abijam king of Judah) a lamp in Jerusalem to set up his son after him. Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 1 Ki. xv. 4, 5. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. Ro. viii. 3.

Urias.] Uriah the Hittite (one of David's worthies) thirty and seven in all. 2 Sa. xxiii. 39. Uriah the Hittite (one of David's mighty men).1 Ch. xi. 41.

7 Roboam.] Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. 1 Ki. xi. 43. And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king. 1 Ki. xii. 1. &c. Solomon's son was Rehoboam, Abia (or Abijam) his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son, &c. 1 Ch. iii. 10. See 2 Ch. ix. 31. There are gathered unto "him" ("Jeroboam" the servant of Solomon) vain men (suid Abijah), the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender hearted, and could not withstand them. 2 Ch. xiii. 7.

Abia.] Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and Abijam his son reigned in his stead. 1 Ki. xiv. 31. In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah. 2 Ch. xiii. 1.

Asa.] Abijam slept with his fathers; and Asa his son reigned in his stead. And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord. But the high places were not removed. And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel, all their days; when Baasha heard (that Benhadad, king of Syria, had hearkened unto king Asa, requiring him to break his league with Baasha) he left off building of Ramah. Then king Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah, and they took away the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof wherewith Baasha had builded,

and king Asa built with them Geba of Benjamin, and Mizpah. 1 Ki. xv. 8-22. The rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah: nevertheless, in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet. 1 Ki. xv. 23. See 2 Ch. xiv, 16.

8 Josaphat.] Asa slept with his fathers, and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead. 1 Ki. xv. 24. It came to pass in the third year (after peace between Syria and Israel), that Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, came down to the "king of Israel" ("Ahab” seduced by false prophets to go against Ramoth Gilead to battle). 1 Ki. xxii. 2. &c. Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. 2 Ki. iii. 1. See 2 Ch. xvii.—xx.

Joram.] And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead. 1 Ki. xxii. 50. In the fifth year of Joram, the son of Ahab king of Israel (Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah), Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign. 2 Ki. viii. 16. Joram "his" ("Jehoshaphat's") son, Ahaziah his son, Joah his son, &c. 1 Ch. iii. 11, &c. See 2 Ki. xxi. 1.

Ozias.] And all the people of Judah took Azariah, which was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah. 2 Ki. xiv. 21. 2 Ch. xxvi. 1. In the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam, king of Israel, began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Israel to reign; he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem. And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord; save that the high places were not removed. The Lord smote the king, so that he was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house, &c. 2 Ki. xv. 1-5.
