at Montpellier for the belt treatife on that
fubject, in 1774); and of an account (in-
ferted in the Philofophical Tranfactions for
1777) of the tides in the Adriatic, which
tends to illuftrate and confirm the Newte-
nian theory on that fubject. Some time
before his death, he cauted the following
infcription to be engraved on a tomb-
stone, which he kept in his houfe:

His Majefty was bora Sept. 25, 1744; had reigned 1 yars; He was 4:h and is fucceeded by his fon, Fre erickWilliam, b. Aug. 3, 1773. and youngest fon of Auguftus-William, 7th and youngest brother to Frederick II. who by Louifa-A nelia, of Brunswick, died 1758. His father did June 12.1753. He married, 1. Elizabeth-Ulnes, of Brufwic. Wolfenbuttle, by whom he had an only daughter, Ch rlore, born 1767, married to Frederick Duke of York; 2. 1769, Frederica-Louifa, of Heffe-Darmstadt, by whom he had, r. Frederick-William, hora Thefe two princes 1770, his fucceffor, and Frederick-CharlesLons, born 1773. married two daughers of Prince Charles of Mecklenburgh-Strelitz, brother to our graciou Queen: 3. Frederica-Sophia-Wilfelning, born 1774, married, 1791, to the Herediary Prince of Orange; 4. FrederickChrißian-Auguftus, born 1-85; another for born 1781; and another 1783. One of the first acts of his Majesty's reign was to aífit the States of Holland, baving previously received their ambaff dor in the most favourable manner; after which he took a journey to the Hague, to have a perfonal interview with his fifter, the Princess of Orange, and entered into a treaty, one of the articles of which was to guarantee the Stadtholder hip in that family. concluded an alliance offenfive and defenfive with the Emperor; and the Prince of Brunswick refigned all his military. employments under him (vol. LVII. 167, 352, 3579.552). He formed an alliance with Great Britain 1788 (LVIII. 651, 917; LIX. 322): another with the Ottoman Porte, 1790 (LX. 367): a commercial one with Poland met with opposition (LXI. 82).

A new code of laws was published at Beihn, 1791 (Ih. 1053). He commanded in perfon his army, which, in conjunction with the Ruffians, May 6,' 1704 (LXIV. 562), invaded Poland. His letter to the King of Poland, respecting the fiege of Wartaw, with the latter's anfwer, Aug, 2 and 3 that year, may be feen Jh. 1041. The following year he made ponce with France, and published a curious declaration
