"If these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren

nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

The following Observations are offered to the public, in the hope they may be found suitable for family use; and also as inducements to readers to pause and consider for themselves the obvious meaning of each chapter of the blessed Gospel ; a habit that will lead to the discovery of deeper views of truth, and to a closer application of them, than may be found in this little work,—though the writer trusts there is not an entire absence of suggestions for the purpose proposed, or any thing beneath the sacred. ness of the subject.

Sept. 1855.

CHAPTER I. VERSES 1–20. TIE book of the generation of 13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud;

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ should greatly tend to realize his having come into the world. Such an unbroken line mostly of names well known, could scarcely have been recorded by accident, or have been believed by the Jews, unless true.

VERSES 21-25.

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,

and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us :

24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife :

23 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son ; and he called his name JESUS.

Emmanuel, God with us—God on our side--not against

He willeth not the death of a sinner. God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life. May we ever remember why his name was to be “ called Jesus.” To save from sin ; from the punishment, and guilt of sin ; a saviour for our utmost need.

CHAPTER II. NOW when Jesus was born in 7 Then Herod when he had

Bethlehem of Judea in the days privily called the wise men, enof Herod the king, behold there quired of them diligently what came wise men from the east to time the star appeared. Jerusalem,

8 And he sent them to Bethle. 2 Saying, Where is he that is hem, and said, Go and search born King of the Jews ? for we diligently for the young child ; and have seen his star in the east, when ye have found him, bring and are come to worship him. me word again, that I may come

3 When Herod the king had and worship him also. heard these things, he was trou. 9 When they had heard the king bled, and all Jerusalem with him. they departed; and, lo, the star,

4 And when he had gathered which they saw in the east, went all the chief priests and scribes before them, till it came and stood of the people together, he deman- over where the young child was. ded of them where Christ should 10 When they saw the star, they be born.

rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 5 And they said unto him, In 11 And when they were come Bethlehem of Judea : for thus it into the house, they saw the young is written by the prophet,

child with Mary his mother, and 6 And thou Bethlehem, in the fell down, and worshipped him : land of Juda, art not the least and when they had opened their among the princes of Juda : for treasures, they presented unto him out of thee shall come a Governor, gifts ; gold, and frankincense, and that shall rule my people Israel. myrrh.

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

i3 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word; for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him,

14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt:

15 And was there until the death of Herod : that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had dilligently enquired of the wise men.

17 Then was fulfilled that which

was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

21 And he arose and took the young child and his mother and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither : notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee :

23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth : that it might be fulfiled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

It is evident Herod and the inhabitants of Jerusalem thought that the star seen by the wise men from the east, portended more than the birth of a common child, or event, or why so troubled ? The wicked flee when no man pursueth. An accusing conscience anticipates evil. With the inconsistency of unbelief Herod thinks it possible to defeat the purposes

of God, for if the babe born at Bethlehem did prove to be him of whom the Prophet spoke, no wicked stratagem of his could baffle God's purposes and destroy the child's life. What an awful exhibition of human nature Herod presents, in venting his malice, by the murder of so many infants. What a beautiful contrast, the joy of the wise men when they again beheld the star! Do we sympathise
