TO THE PUBLIC.

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA forms a Dictionary
of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, on the most ap-
proved and comprehensive plan. It was the first
Work of the class which aspired to embrace all the
departments of human knowledge; and the superiori-
ty of its Plan, as well as the general merit of its Ar-

ticles have procured for it a larger share of success and approbation, than ever attended any similar undertaking. It has been the leading object of its Conductors to combine abstract with practical, and solid with pleasing information, in such proportions as would be most useful, and most acceptable to the Public-to deliver the truths of science in the most accurate and improved form, and, at the same time, to pay due attention to those branches of knowledge, which, though not admitting of a scientific shape, are yet deservedly popular, and have a powerful influence on the taste, habits, and character of the individual-in a word, to render the Work at once a Dictionary of Science, a Book of Universal Reference, and a copious Abstract of the Literature and Philosophy of the Age. Of their success in carrying this plan into execution, it is scarcely necessary to speak. The publication of FIVE EDITIONS, with successive improvements, and the sale of nearly Thirty Thousand Copies, are most unequivocal proofs of the high estimation in which the Work has been held by the Public.

The SIXTH EDITION, now offered to the Public, has received a variety of corrections and improvements. In the Historical Articles, the narrative has been continued, so as to embrace all the most Memorable Events which have occurred down to the present time. The Geographical and Statistical Articles have been adapted to the late Political Arrangements, and amended by incorporating the new information furnished by recent Travellers, and references have been made to the new Articles in the SUPPLEMENT, now in course of publication; se

that the whole will form the most complete Repertory of General Knowledge that has yet been given to the Public.

The Engravings, of which there are nearly 600, will be found, with a few exceptions, to be entirely new; and the Letter-Press has also been considerably improved.
