according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day, xxii. 3. I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Which thing I also did in Jerusalem and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the Chief Priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them, xxvi. 9, 10. And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers, Gal. i. 14. They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might af fect them, iv. 17.

VER. 3.

̓Αγνοοῦντες γὰρ τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην, καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν δικαιοσύνην ζητοῦντες στῆσαι, τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐχ ὑπετάγησαν.

For they being ignorant of a God's righteousness, band going about to establish their own righteousness, c'have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him, Dan. ix. .6-9. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son, Luke xv. 17-21.

VER. 4.

Τέλος γὰρ νόμου Χριστὸς, εἰς δικαιοσύ την παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι.

a For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

a For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, Rom. viii. 3, 4. Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled, Matt. v. 17, 18. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster, to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith, Gal. iii. 24. Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ, Col. ii. 17. But into the second went the High Priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: The Holy Ghost this signifying, That the way into the holiest of all was not yet made mani

fest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing. Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience; Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. But Christ being come an High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh;

priest standeth daily ministering, and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins, for ever sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above :)

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Heb.ix. 714. For the law, having a shadow of good things to come, und not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore, when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me; In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure: Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of Η, τίς καταβήσεται εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον, me,) to do thy will, Ο God. Above τοῦτ ̓ ἔστι Χριστὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναγαγεῖν· when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt-offerings and offering for sin Or, a who shall descend into the deep? thou wouldest not, neither hadst plea-(that is, to bring up Christ again from Bure therein; which are offered by the the dead.) law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. Πᾶς γὰρ ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου, σωθήσεται.

VER. 14.

Πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσονται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίσ τευσαν ; πῶς δὲ πιστεύσουσιν οὗ οὐκ ἤκου σαν; πῶς δὲ ἀκούσουσι χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος;

a How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? band how shall they believe in him of whom they without a preacher ? have not heard? and how shall they hear

a But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him, Heb. xi. 6.

Πῶς δὲ κηρύξουσιν, ἐὰν μὴ ἀποσταλῶσι ; καθὼς γέγραπται· Ως ὡραῖοι οι πόδες τῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων εἰρήνην, τῶν εὐαγ γελιζομένων τὰ ἀγαθά.

Αρα ἡ πίστις ἐξ ἀκοῆς· ἡ δὲ ἀκοῇ διὰ ῥήματος Θεοῦ.

a So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

VER. 18.

̓Αλλὰ λέγω· Μὴ οὐκ ἤκουσαν; Μενοῦνγε εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐξῆλθεν ὁ φθόγγος αὐτῶν, καὶ εἰς τὰ πέρατα τῆς οἰκουμένης τὰ ῥήματα αὐτῶν.

But I say, Have they not heard? • Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words bunto the ends of the world.

VER. 19.

̓Αλλὰ λέγω· Μὴ οὐκ ἔγνω Ισραήλ ; πρῶτος Μωσῆς λέγει· Ἐγὼ παραζηλώσω ὑμᾶς ἐπ ̓ οὐκ ἔθνει, ἐπὶ ἔθνει ἀσυνέτῳ πα βοργιῶ ὑμᾶς.

But I say, a Did not Israel know? First b Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

But Esaias is very bold, and saith, a I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.

*I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name, Isa. lxv. 1.

Πρὸς δὲ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ λέγει· ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐξεπέτασα τὰς χεῖρας μου προς λαὸν ἀπειθοῦντα καὶ ἀντιλέγοντα.

But to Israel he saith, a All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

CHAP. XI. VER. 1.

Λέγω οὖν· Μὴ ἀπώσατο ὁ Θεὸς τὸν λαὸν abroũ; Mù yévaro' nai yàp iyù 'lopandτης εἰμὶ, ἐκ σπέρματος Αβραάμ, φυλῆς Βενιαμίν.

I say then, Hath God cast away his people? a God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

a For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake ; because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people, 1 Sam. xii. 22. Will the LORD cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more ? Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah, Psal. Ixxvii. 7-9. For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will be forsake his inheritance: xciv. 14. Thus saith the LORD, If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel, for all that they have done, saith the LORD, Jer. xxxi. 37. Behold, the eyes of the Lord GoD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LonD." For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth, Hos. ix. 8, 9.
