That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;

Ὅταν δὲ προσφέρωσιν ὑμᾶς ἐπὶ τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας, μὴ μεριμνᾶτε πῶς ἢ τί ἀπολογήσησθε, ἢ τί είπητε

a And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

VER. 12.

Τὸ γὰρ ἅγιον Πνεῦμα διδάξει ὑμᾶς ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ, ἃ δεῖ εἰπεῖν.

And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

VER. 14.

Ο δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ̓́Ανθρωπε, τις με κατέστησε δικαστὴν ἡ μεριστὴν ἐφ ̓ ὑμᾶς ; * And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

VER. 15.

Εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· ρᾶτε καὶ φυλάσσεσθε ἀπὸ τῆς πλεονεξίας· ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ περισσεύειν τινὶ ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὑτοῦ.

And he said unto them, & Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

b A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked, Psal. xxxvii. 16. Better is little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure, and trouble therewith, Prov. xv. 16. How much better is it to get wisdom than gold and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver? xvi. 16. Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit, Eccles. iv. 6. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall

drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Matt. vi. 25, 26. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment, let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich, fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which | drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil; which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness, 1 Tim. vi.

VER. 16.

Εἶπε δὲ παραβολὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς, λέγων· ̓Ανθρώπου τινὸς πλουσίου εὐφόρησεν ἡ χώρα.

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

a See on Matt. xiii. ver. 3. clause 1. The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure: into whose hand God bringeth abundantly, Job xii. 6. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands in their death; but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish, Psal. Ixxiii. 37. Behold, these are the ungodly who prosper in the world; they increase in riches, 12. For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust, Matt. v. 45.

But God said unto him, aThou fool! this night * thy soul shall be required of thee: bthen whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

* Or, do they require thy soul. a God shall likewise destroy thee for ever: he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling-place, and root thee out of the land of the

living. Selah. The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: Lo, this is the man that made the abundance of his riches, and not God his strength; but trusted in strengthened himself in his wickedness, Psal. lii. 5-7. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death, Prov. xi. 4. As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool, Jer. xvii. 11.

b Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay: He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver, Job xxvii. 16, 17. Surely every man walketh in a vain shew; surely they are disquieted in vain : he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them, Psal. xxxix. 6. Be not thou afraid when

a So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not brich towards God.

aLay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thievesdonot break through nor steal, Matt. vi. 19, 20. Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days, James v. 1-3.

b Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life, 1 Tim. vi. 17-19. Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? James ii. 5. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see, Rev. iii. 18.] VER. 22.

VER. 23.

Ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστι τῆς τροφῆς, καὶ τὸ σῶμα, τοῦ ἐνδύματος.

The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

VER. 24.

Κατανοήσατε τοὺς κόρακας, ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν, οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν· οἷς οὐκ ἔστι ταμεῖον, οὐδὲ ἀποθήκη, καὶ ὁ Θεὸς τρέφει αὐ τούς πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμεῖς διαφέρετε τῶν ETE;

a Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them. How much more are ye better than the fowls?

Κατανοήσατε τὰ κρίνα, πῶς αὐξάνει· οὐ κοπια, οὐδὲ νήθει· λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν, οὐδὲ Σου λομῶν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἐν τούτων.

a Consider the lilies how they grow; they toil not, they spin not? and yet I say unto you, That Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

If then God so clothe the grass, which is to-day in the field, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

VER. 32.

Fear not, a little flock; for it is byour Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life ; and few there be that find it, Matt. vii. 14. So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen, xx. 16.]
