EDWARDS, Committee. REPORT ON FRUITS. CARY'S SEEDLING FALL Apple. Premium awarded by the Committee. Statement by Mr. Cary.-Cary's Seedling, a fall apple. The tree came up from the seed, near my bee house, and was permitted to remain. About 8 years old, has borne about 4 years; is a very full bearer; apples, when ripe, green, with a yellowish or golden hue; rather above common size, very rich and highly flavored-not remarkably juicy, moderately sweet when quite ripe; ripens about the 15th of September, in present locality. College Hill, Hamilton county, O. F. G. CARY. The above is a description of the seedling awarded the premium by the committee. PEARS. Mr. F. R. Elliott, of Cleveland, presented the best and most numerous varieties. Mr. Elliott's pears, of which he exhibited 57 varieties, were not entered at the office. The committee state that but few other pears were exhibited. GRAPES. A premium of $5 and diploma, were awarded to G. Richards, for a new seedling grape, in color resembling the Catawba, but of a thinner skin, more delicate in taste and flavor, bunches not shortened, and more loose in the bunches. REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON WINE. The committee, to whom was referred the various samples of Wines, would respectfully report, that, in the examination of the collection, they were much pleased to find the manufacture of wines had extended itself so generally throughout the State. In awarding premiums, there can be but one expression, as, indeed, but one was made, by numerous gentlemen of taste in these matters, who kindly aided the committee in comparing the varied specimens, and we therefore award first premium of diploma, for sparkling Catawba, to N. Longworth, this being an extremely pleasant and agreeable wine, of Champaign character. Diploma to N. Longworth, for a dry wine, made from the Herbemont grape. Diploma to N, Longworth, for a Ladies' wine. Diploma for a dry wine, made from Catawba grape, to N. Longworth. The committee, while unable to award special premiums to many others, who presented specimens of their wines for a comparison, beg leave to remark, that, in their judgment, the addition of sugar, of foreign spirits, of whiskey, or otherwise, the wine is injured, rather than improved; and, while they would speak well of all, advising continued and extended exertions, the superiority of the wines to whom diplomas were awarded, preclude their further action. F. R. ELLIOTT, for Committee. REPORT ON FIRE ENGINES. Class D. Mechanical Department, Miscellaneous Articles. The committee appointed to examine the performance of the Reindeer and Ohio engines, report: That by actual measurement, the Reindeer, Brighton company, threw water 173 feet from the nozzle, through 14 feet of hose, and ğ inch nozzle, manned by 32 men, 18 of whom were on the seats, and 14 on the ropes, or 187 feet from the centre of the engine. The Ohio Engine, Washington company, threw water 187 feet, 8 inches, from the nozzle, through 53 feet, 6 inches of hose, and 15-16 inch nozzle, manned by 67 men, 44 on the seats, and 23 on the ropes, or 243 feet 2 inches from the centre of the engine. The committee are happy to state that both engines performed extremely well, and the trial conducted with a fairness and decorum highly creditable to the officers and members of both companies.
