Then shall the Minister say,

WR E yield thee hearty thanks, most

merciful Father, that it hath pleased thee to receive this Infant into the Christian Church by baptism; and humbly we beseech thee to grant, that he may be dead unto sin, and alive unto righteousness, so that finally with the residue of thy holy Church, he may be an inheritor of thine everlasting kingdom, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ Then all standing up, the Minister may address the Relations or Friends of the child who may be present, thus,

NORASMUCH as ye have brought this Child to be baptized and devoted it to God, you must remember that it is your parts and duties to see that this Infant be instructed so soon as he shall be able to learn; the Articles of the Christian Faith, and brought up in the fear of God, and to obey his holy Will and Commandments, and that he may know these things the better, ye shall call upon him to hear Sermons, and teach him the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments, and

all other things which a Christian ought to know and believe to his soul's health; and that this Child may be virtuously brought up to lead a godly and a Christian life; remembering always that Baptism doth represent unto us our profession, which is to follow the example of our Saviour Christ, and to be made like unto him; that as he died, and rose again for us; so should we, who are baptized, die from sin, and rise again unto righteousness, continually mortifying all our evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding in all virtue and godliness of living.

¶ Then shall he add, and say,

EAR therefore what the word of God says respecting your duty, Deut. 6, c. 5, 6, and 7. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words which I command thee this day shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when

thou risest up. Joshua saith, Joshua 24 and 15, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord; and Paul saith of Timothy, 2 Tim. 3 and 15.- From a child hast thou known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus, and again Ephe. 6 and 4, and ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

THE MINISTRATION

OF

PRIVATE BAPTISM OF CHILDREN.

IN HOUSES.

The Minister shall admonish the People that they defer not the Baptism of their children longer then the first or second Sunday next after their Birth, unless upon a great and reasonable cause.

And also they shall warn them, that without like great cause and necessity they procure not their children to be baptized at home in their houses. But when need shall compel them so to do, then Baptism shall be administered as followeth.

First, let the Minister with those who are present, call upon "God, and say the Lord's Prayer, and so many of the collects appointed to be said before in the Form of Public Baptism, as the time and present exigence will suffer. And then, the child being named by some one who is present, the Minister shall pour or sprinkle water upon it, saying these words;

N

I baptize thee in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Then all kneeling down, the Minister shall give thanks unto God, and say,

WE E yield thee hearty thanks, most

merciful Father, that it hath pleas

ed thee to receive this Infant into the Christian Church by Baptism; and humbly we beseech thee to grant, that he may be dead unto sin, and alive unto righteousness, so that finally with the residue of thy holy Church, he may be an inheritor of thine everlasting kingdom, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

And let them not doubt, but that the child so baptized, is lawfully and sufficiently baptized, and ought not to be baptized again. Yet nevertheless, if the child, which is after this sort baptized, do afterwards live, it is expedient that it be brought into the Church, to the intent that if the Minister did himself baptize that child, the congregation may be certified of the true form of Baptism, by him privately before used; in which case he shall say thus,

I Certify you,

Certify you, that at such a time and at such a place, before divers witnesses I baptized this Child.

In

But if the child were baptized by any other Minister, then the Minister shall examine whether the child hath been baptized agreeable to the Christian Ordinance. which case he shall not again baptize the child, but shall receive him into the Christian Church, saying thus,

I

Certify you, that in this case all is well done, concerning the baptizing of this child.

¶ Then shall the Minister read,
ST. MARK 10. 13.

THEY brought young children unto

Christ, that he should touch them; and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Then the Minister shall say,

SEEING now, brethren, that this Child

is received into the Christian Church, let us pray that he may not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, but manfully fight under his banner, against sin, the world, and the devil; and be Christ's faithful soldier and servant unto his life's end. Amen.
