PREFACE.

AGREEABLY to the intimations occasionally given to my readers, I now beg leave respectfully to inform them of the close of this work; and to acknowledge my obligations to those by whose encouragement it has been hitherto supported.

In reviewing these labours, I happily find nothing for self-reproach. The main principles uniformly inculcated I have the firm persuasion are those of eternal TRUTH and JUSTICE, which must at length finally overcome all opposition; although the means made use of by the Almighty Ruler of events to accomplish his purposes, may be very different from what the most enlightened, and the most virtuous of the human race might suggest. He is speaking to guilty nations terrible things in righteousness; and the British nation by her perseverance in a system of war, and corruption, by her obstinate refusal to reform her numerous crying abuses, in CHURCH and STATE, appears determined to brave " the Omnipotent to arms!" and thus instead of taking warning by the example of the vitiated governments on the continent, inviting, and accelerating those judgments which have hurled them to destruction.

As to the manner in which these principles have been inculcated, I trust the haste which unavoidably attends employment of this kind, will apologise for those defects and inaccuracies of style, and typographical errors which must have been too apparent to my readers. As to the fervour which has at times distinguished my language, it has I can assure the reader, been kindled in an honest heart venting its genuine feelings. I am sensible of many taulogical
