BEFORE we can estimate correctly what constitutes the efficient Sabbath school teacher, it is necessary that we have a distinct idea of the object for which Sabbath school teaching is carried on. There was a time when the Sabbath school was the only educational agency brought to bear on a large number of our children, and Sabbath classes were, in many instances, largely devoted to the teaching of reading and kindred subjects. Since secular education, however, is now within the reach of all, this is not necessary, and it would be an entire misuse of time to take up Sabbath evenings with such work. The Sabbath school now sets before it a higher purpose-nothing short of teaching the way of salvation. In the secular school the mind of the child is educated-in the Sabbath school the spiritual nature is to be educated. The man who wishes to fulfil his calling as a Sabbath school teacher must, above all things, realize this.
