under the warmer side of a hedge, with a few briars and stakes. There, for about a week, he took shelter, until the herbage failed his flock, and he removed, I knew not whither. His tent was, however, left behind. A few days after I rode that way, and looked for the shepherd's tent, but it was gone. The stormy winds had scattered its frail materials, and only a few fragments strewed the ground to mark out that once, for a brief day, the tent had its residence, and the shepherd bis solace there. And such is this life, and such are all the airy expectations and imaginary felicities, and hoped for ports and places beneath the sun. Time scatters them, as the storm did the fern and straw of the shepherd's tent. A thousand events are continually transpiring, which remove men from the pastures and possessions of to-day, and eject them from all their anxiously reared habitations, and drive them afar off from their fields and estates. Their years pass on as the hours of the day, their hours fly, as it were, with the rapidity of moments, and soon, very soon, comes that lamentable hour, when they, who sought and desired their good things on earth, must behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world. Oh, how sad is such an event to him, who is at ease in his possessions, who has been laying field to field, and house to house, and is not rich towards God! For then his age, his hopes, his expectations are departed for ever—they are removed as a shepherd's tent.

A Voyage to Immanuel's Land, in the Ship Hopewell, &c.

This is a little in the Bunyan style, which, we confess, however pleasing to others, has no charms for us. If any thing could render such raw material digestible, it would be the quaintness of spirit of the excellent Old Tinker, whose book has run through more editions than Milton or Cowper. In this savoury allegory, now under view, the Good Ship Hopewell, under Captain Magnanimous, sets sail for Fair Haven in Immanuel's Land; the crew consists of sailors, passengers, and mariners, viz. Lieutenant Keep Truth, Midshipman Love Peace, Mate Fervid, Cockswain Heavenly Mind, Helmsman Trust-worthy; but some of the crew are of a contrary character, and these names are Messrs. Prim, Pliable, Love-praise, Legal Hope, &c. The voyage is quite eventful and fraught with moving accidents, sinful sea monsters, and anthropophagous swallowers of saints. They descry Popish Continent, hover in sight of Pharisee Cove, and Priestcraft Harbour, are almost tempted to land and ascend, (under the guidance of Sir Carnal Security,) Ceremony Hill: but on approaching the shore, they are deterred, by seeing an ugly sort of landing place, called Heretic's Burning Field, and a black sort of fort, called Lollard's Tower; so weighing anchor, they pass Tradition River, and proceed to sea. The Good Ship Hopewell then touches at Fanatic Land, a wild country, under the sway of a loose kind of a despot, called Antinomos; and certain pilots come aboard to guide the vessel into harbour, one calling himself Hot Head, another Fickle-mind; and this continent appears to be inhabited by lawless tribes of Ranters, Shakers, and Jumpers. But we have not time to proceed farther with the precious Voyage, and shall only say, that after being for some time ice-locked under the cold Continent which terminates at Sceptic Point, Captain Magnanimous brings his ship and crew to the desired haven in Immanuel's Land. We repeat that to those who like such writing as this, the Voyage of the Good Ship Hopewell will prove entertaining and instructive.
