The Author's Apology.

'VE heard a certain author fay,

I'VE

He wrote to pafs his time away;
Then pr'ythee critic let me ufe,
His very words, for my excufe.

You might have wrote, I hear you cry,
But wifely fhould have thrown them by.
I own you're right-but take this hint,
'Tis bread, not paftime, makes me print.

To Mifs

Frown not fweet maid, nor with cruel difdain,
Declare you have pleasure in giving me pain;

I retort like a Chriftian, mind it, ye fair,
That I am a Chriftian---for this is my pray'r.
"May the rofe's bright tincture be seen in your cheek,
"The whitenefs of lillies on your bofom and neck;
"To the ftatue of Venus, be you compar'd,
("Alas! I am fure your heart is as hard;

"May your eyes be compar'd to the fhining black floe; "Your lips to the ruby, your teeth to the fnow;

May you warble fweet mufic, like birds on the fpray; May you look like the lamb, like the lamb may be gay;

May fnarling old maids, as you' pass on the street, "Cry out, you're perfum'd, your breath is so sweet; "May they enyy you long, for the charms that they find "Shine forth in your perfon, and beam from your mind; "And to crown all my joys, O hear me, great Jove! May you yield all thefe charms a reward to my love.

On

On the Death of a favourite Pug, wantonly killed by a Stone.

ALAS poor Pug! thy merit may demand,

[ocr errors]

The pen, the praises of fome mafter hand;

Thy gratitude, a virtue rare to find,
With love and true fidelity were join'd;
No force, no bribe, (at this let courtiers fmile,
The shame and scandal of our British isle !)
Could make him for a moment to divide,
Or fly for int'reft from his mafter's fide.
His honeft heart, the honest did approve,
He fcorn'd to flatter thofe he could not love,
Living he was esteem'd---and dead I mourn,
And to his mem'ry dedicate this urn.

EPITAPH.

HERE underneath this grass-green fod,
Lies the remains of Pug;

A heap of duft---a lifeless clod,

Alas my fav'rite dog!

Sudden, ah! fudden was his death,

No fickness had he known;
Without a figh refign'd his breath,
He died without a groan.
