VISIT OF JESUS TO MARTHA AND

MARY.

(Luke x. 38–42.) And it came to pass, as they travelled, that he entered into a certain village, and a woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Bid her, therefore, that she help me.” Jesus answered and said unto her, “Martha, Martha, thou art anxious, and troublest thyself about many things. One thing only is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

CAUTION AGAINST COVETOUSNESS.

(Luke xii. 13–21.) Then one of the company said to Jesus, “ Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me." But he said unto him, “Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?” And he said unto them, “ Take heed and beware of covetousness, for, however rich a man may be, the happiness of his life dependeth not on his possessions.”

And he spake a parable saying, “The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, “What shall I do? because I have no room where to store up my crops.' And he said, " This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I store up all my produce and my goods. And. I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.' But God said unto him, Thou fool, this very night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided ?' So fareth it with him, who layeth up treasure for himself, but is not rich toward God.”

DISCOURSE CONCERNING HUMILITY.

(Luke xiv. 1, 7-14.) And it came to pass that he went into the house of one of the rulers, who was a Pharisee, to eat bread with him on the sabbath-day. And when he observed how the guests chose the best places, he gave them this injunction; “ When thou art invited by any man to a weddingfeast, do not sit down in the best place, lest a more honourable man than thou be invited by him, and he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place;' and thou shouldst begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, that when he that inviteth thee cometh, he may say to thee, “Friend, go up higher;' then shalt thou have honour shewn thee by them that sit at meat with thee; for whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

Then said he also to him who had invited him, “When thou givest a dinner or a supper, invite not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours, lest they also invite thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind; and thou shalt be blessed, for though they have nothing wherewith to recompense thee, yet thou shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.”

PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON.

(Luke xv. 11-32.) A CERTAIN man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, “ Father, give me the portion of the estate, which falleth to me." And he divided unto them his wealth.

And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. Then he went and hired himself to a certain citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks: which the swine did eat, but no man gave unto him.
