silver. And from that time he sought an opportunity to deliver him up in the absence of the multitude.

Then came the day of unleavened bread, on which the pascal lamb was to be sacrificed. And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare for us the passover, that we may eat it." They said unto him, "Where wilt thou that we prepare it ?" And he said unto them, "Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there will meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house into which he shall enter; and say to the master of the house, 'The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I may eat the passover with my disciples?' And he will shew you a large upper room, furnished; make ready there." So they went and found every thing as he had said unto them; and they made ready the passover.

[The Jews ate unleavened bread, and

sacrificed a lamb, once a year, in memory of the deliverance of their forefathers from the slavery in Egypt. This feast was called The Passover, because, when the angel came to destroy the firstborn of the Egyptians, he passed over the houses of the Israelites. xii. 1-30.]

THE LAST SUPPER.

(Luke xxii. 24-27; John xiii. 2-17; Matt. xxvi. 21—25; John xiii. 30–38; Mark xiv. 31; Matt. xxvi. 26-28; 1 Cor. xi. 23-26.)

Now there was a strife among the disciples, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And Jesus said unto them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and they that have authority over them, are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so; but he that is greatest among you, let

him be as the younger, and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For which is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at meat? But I am among you as he that serveth."

And while they were at supper, (the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,) Jesus, though he knew that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was returning to God, rose from the supper-table, and laying aside his outer garment, took a towel and girt himself about with it. Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

Then he came to Simon Peter; and Peter said unto him, "Lord, wouldst thou wash my feet?" Jesus answered and said unto him, "What I do thou understandest not now, but thou wilt

understand hereafter." Peter saith unto him, "Thou shalt never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I wash thee not, thou canst have no part with me." Simon Peter saith unto him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head." Jesus saith unto him, "He who hath bathed himself, needeth only to wash his feet, for the rest of his body is clean; and ye are clean, but not all." For he knew who would betray him; therefore said he, "Ye are not all clean."

[It was the custom in Judæa for those who were invited to a feast, to wash themselves by bathing, before they went; but as they walked commonly in sandals, and had thus only the sole of the foot covered, it was usual to have their feet washed by the servants of the family, before they laid themselves down on the couches to partake of the feast. Their feet, which had been soiled by walking,

required to be washed, though the rest of their body did not.]

After Jesus had washed their feet, and put on his outer garment, he placed himself again at the table, and said to them, "Do ye understand what I have been doing to you? Ye call me Master and Lord; and ye say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet; for I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily I say unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, nor he that is sent greater than he who sent him. Since ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."

And as they were eating, he said, "Verily I say unto you, that one of you will betray me." And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, "Lord, is it I?" And he answering said, "He
