regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore what thou thinkest. Is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar or not?” But Jesus perceived their evil design and said,

Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites ? Shew me the tribute money." And they brought unto him a penny. And he said unto them, “Whose is this image and superscription ?” They say unto him, “ Cæsar's.” Then saith he unto them, “ Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which are Cæsar's, and unto 'God the things which are God's.” When they heard this, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

The same day came unto him the Sadducees; and one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, “Which is the first commandment of all?" And Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is, * Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.' This is the first commandment; and the second, which is like it, is this, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself': there is no other commandment greater than these."

And the scribe said unto him, “ Well, Master, thou hast said the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as ones'self, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said unto him, “ Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.” And no man after that durst ask him any question.

CHRIST REPROVES THE PHARISEES, AND PRAISES THE POOR WIDOW.

(Matt. xxiii.; Mark xii. 41-44.) Then spake Jesus to the multitude and to his disciples, saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat; all therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works, for they say, and do not; for they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen of men; they make broad their phylacteries,* and enlarge the borders of their garments; and love the uppermost places at feasts, and the

“But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for ye neither go in yourselves, nor suffer them that are entering to go in.

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour the substance of widows, and for a pretence make long prayers; therefore ye shall receive the greater condemnation.

“ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise, and cummin; and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faithfulness; these ought ye to do, and not to leave the others undone, Ye blind guides! who strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel.

hypocrites ! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres; which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but within they are full of dead men's bones, and all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”.

And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and observed how the people cast money into the treasury; and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow; and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. Then he called unto him his disciples, and said unto them, “Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in than any of those who have cast into the treasury; for all they did cast in of their abundance, but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”
