REMARK S.

The substance of these remarks, except what relates to the Associations, was presented as a report to the General Association.

THE ASSOCIATIONS.-The fifteen Associations report in all 351 members, 43 of whom are living out of the State. The average ministerial age is 21 years: in Fairfield East it is 15 years, and in New Haven West it is 29 years. Among the members are 1 government clerk, 1 foreign missionary, 1 state missionary, 1 president of a college, 2 farmers, 3 chaplains, 5 agents of benevolent societies, 6 professors in college and theological seminaries, 13 teachers, 8 stated preachers, 45 acting pastors, 168 pastors, and 98 without charge.

Of the large number without charge more than one quarter of the whole some are in secular pursuits, some are invalids, a considerable number are candidates for ministerial service, nearly one half are aged persons, and the average ministerial age is thirty years,

43 licentiates are reported, 9 of whom have been licensed since July 1, 1862.

In the period from July 1, 1862 to June 30, 1863, 11 young men were ordained, 2 as evangelists, 3 as chaplains in the army, 1 as associate pastor and 5 as pastors; 10 ministers were installed as pastors; 20 pastors were dismissed; and 6 ministers, including one pastor, died-whose average age was 54 years.

THE CHURCHES.-The report of the statistics of the churches covers the year ending Dec, 31, 1862. In 1862 no church was disbanded and two were organized-one in the Davenport society in New Haven, making 13 in that town, and one in Tariffville in the town of Simsbury.

The number of churches is 285-2 more than in 1861-namely, 284 in this State and one in the State of New York, and includes 223 consociated and 62 non-consociated churches.

The Statistics. The statistics of every church are given; and the reports of all the churches, except four, are complete. The whole number of questions unanswered is fifteen, thirteen of which pertain to two churches. Of these four churches, three do not report the infants baptized; one does not report the adults baptized; one gives its resident members, but not its entire membership, nor the number of deaths; and two report neither the number of males and females nor the number of absentees, nor the number of families. In all other respects the statistical reports are complete, in the sense that every question is answered. This result is owing to the faithfulness of the collectors and to the good will of the ministers and churches.

Ministers.-Jan. 1, 1863, 26 churches had no ministers, in the sense that they had none hired for so long a time as four months. Most of these churches had preaching, and only one of them was without preaching through the previous year. 26 churchers had stated preachers, 56 had acting pastors and 177 had pastors-five of which had associate pastors. The average term of acting pastors is three years, and that of pastors is nine years;-in Fairfield and Windham counties it is six years, and in New London county it is fourteen years.

Members.-Jan. 1, 1863, the churches reported 45,887 members. The sex of 713 of these was not stated. Of the remainder 14,873 were males and 30,302 were females. 4,996 or nearly one-ninth of the whole, were absentees, The smallest church had 18 members and the largest 570. The additions were-786 by profession and 891 by letter, in all, 1,671; and the removals were-869 by death, 889 by letter, and 111 by discipline-including withdrawal of watch and care from absentees, in all 1,869. The removals exceeded the additions by 198. The deaths exceeded the additions by profession by 83.

The deaths in 1862 were 19 more than in 1861, and the deaths in 1861 and 1862 were ten per cent. more than in 1859 and 1860-before the war began. 251 adults were baptized and 807 children.

Absent members.

It is very desirable that the attention of pastors and churches should be directed to the class of absent members. There is great diversity in the way in which these members are cared for. Thus 40 churches with 6,536 members report 1,603 absentees, or one quarter of the whole num. ber. One of these churches reports 70, another 71, another 75, another 76, another 93 and another 100 absentees-enough in each case to constitute a church of respectable size. In these forty churches the ratio of absentees ranges from one-fifth to three-fourths of the entire membership.

On the other hand, there are 40 other churches which report 7,300 members and only 224 absentees, or 3 per cent, of the whole number. Among these, one with 227 members reports only 6 absentees; another with 410, only 4; and another with 203, only one; and the reports in
