In

HE Cambridge Edition of Browning's Works is a marvel of convenience, compactness, and comprehensiveness. addition to the Poetic and Dramatic Works, it contains, in an Appendix, the Essay on Shelley, which is almost the sole writing by Browning in prose; it has Notes and Indexes, and is prefaced with a fine portrait which is pronounced about the most satisfactory likeness yet made of him. It would have seemed incredible that the entire voluminous product

of Browning's genius should be brought within the compass of a single volume which should be at once convenient and legible; but it has been done with signal success. The clear type, the thin but opaque paper, the flexible but firm binding, and the vigilant editorial care of all details needed to equip the book for students of Browning, all these make a well-nigh perfect book.

Mr. Percival Lowell on Mars.

Few papers have within the past six months attracted so marked attention as those by Mr. Percival Lowell on the planet Mars. They contained. so much and so interesting information about our next-door neighbor in the planetary system, that they were read with great eagerness. They gained additional zest from the fact that they embodied the results of Mr. Lowell's very careful observations made at his observatory at Flagstaff in Arizona. They treated the atmosphere of Mars, the water problem, the possible canals, oases, etc., with the acuteness and vivacity which have characterized Mr. Lowell's several volumes on Japan. Mr. Lowell has in preparation for early publication a book comprising all his observations of Mars, with illustrations. which lend them emphasis and very positive additional interest. This book is certainly "important if true," and Mr. Lowell comes very near indeed to making his reader believe it true, and who can disprove it?
