By the Bishops, the Clergy, and the Laity of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, in General Convention, held in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one, it was resolved that this Hymnal be authorized for use, and that no other Hymns shall be allowed in the public worship of this Church, except such as are now ordinarily bound up with the Book of Common Prayer. Resolved: That this Hymnal shall not be bound up with the Book of Common Prayer, until order to that effect shall be taken by the General Convention. Resolved: That this Hymnal, when finally corrected by the Committee thereon, shall be free to be printed and published by all responsible publishers, who shall obtain a license to that effect from the Trustees of the Fund for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of deceased Clergymen, and of aged, infirm, and disabled Clergymen, and who shall assure to such Trustees a payment, to be applied for the uses of said fund, equivalent to ten per cent. upon the retail selling price: and that the copyright of the Hymnal shall vest in said Trustees.
