THOU, who didft put to flight Primæval filence, when the morning stars, Exulting, fhouted o'er the rifing ball; O thou, whofe word from folid darkness struck That spark, the fun, ftrike wisdom from my foul; My foul, which flies to thee, her truft, her treasure, As mifers to their gold, while others rest. Thro' this opaque of nature, and of soul, This double night, tranfmit one pitying ray, To lighten, and to cheer. O lead my mind, A mind that fain would wander from its woe, Lead it thro' various fcenes of life and death; And from each scene the nobleft truths infpire: Norless infpire my conduct, than my views; Teach my best reason, reason; my best will Teach rectitude; and fix my firm refolve Wisdom to wed, and pay her long arrear. ESPAIR is a cowardly Thing, And the Spirit fuggesting it bad; In Spite of my Sins I will fing, That Mercy is ftill to be had. 2 For he that has shown it so far, As to give me a sensible Heart, How heinous foever they are, Delights in the merciful Part. By Affliction, fo heavy to bear, He fearches the Wound he would cure; 'Tis his, to be kindly fevere, 'Tis mine, by his Grace to endure. 3 4 5 6 O! comfort thyfelf in his Love, Who came, and ftill comes, from above, Who faid, and continues to fay, Come, Sinner, to me come away, A Refufal to come is abfurd; HYMN HYMN CCCXXXVIII. OD hath now sent his living Oracle GOD Into the World to teach his final Will, And fends his Spirit of Truth henceforth to dwell In pious Hearts, an inward Oracle To all Truth requifite for Men to know. EXTOL not riches, Sirs, the toil of fools, The wife man's cumbrance, if not snare, To flacken virtue, and abate her edge, Riches and realms; yet not for that a crown, To him who wears the regal diedem, When on his shoulders each man's burden lies; For therein stands the office of a king, His honour, virtue, merit and chief praise, That for the public all this weight he bears. Yet he who reigns within himself, and rules Paffions, defires, and fears, is more a king; Which every wife and virtuous man attains: And who attains not, ill afpires to rule Cities of men, or headstrong multitudes, Subject himself to anarchy within, Or lawless paffions in him which he ferves. But to guide nations in the way of truth By faving doctrine, and from error lead To know, and knowing worship God aright, Is yet more kingly; this attracts the foul, Governs the inner man, the nobler part; That other o'er the body only reigns, And oft by force, which to a generous mind reigning can be no fincere delight. Befides Befides, to give a kingdom hath been thought Greater and nobler done, and to lay down Far more magnanimous, than to assume. HYMN CCCXLII. I WHO fhall the Lord's Elect condema? 'Tis God that juftifies their Souls, And Mercy, like a mighty Stream, 2 Who fhall adjudge the Saints to Hell? Behold him rifing from the Dead. 3 He lives! he lives! and fits above, Who fhall divide us from his Love? HYMN CCCXLIII.
