This is an area of personnel clearances. In it, we are requesting $33.3 million for FY 1987. This is for about a total of 30,000 clearances of which 20,000 are in the longer term, more extensive background investigations and 10,000 are for our National Agency checks.

We are looking very hard at this program. We have a goal to reverse those numbers to ensure that the cheaper, shorter types of clearances such as National Agency checks would be the ones we would have in the 20,000 number. The more expensive, longer term background investigations would be the smaller number. We are optimistic that we will be able to make progress.

We have just started studying this and working toward this goal along with other areas of government to look at the way we do our security clearance programs. We feel that we will be able to work toward our goal.

This slide shows what our Office of International Security Affairs does: it monitors foreign nuclear explosions, takes care of transfers of nuclear exports, as well as technical support of arms control negotiations and activities.

The balloons shown around it are many of the areas in our arms control process in which our Office of International Security Affairs plays a major role in technology and advice.
