ECCLES. vii. 14. Former Part. In the Day of Profperity be Joyful, but in the Day of Adverfity confider: God, also, bath fet the one over against the other.

P

Rofperity, which carries the Affections outward and discovers them in Joy, is, by no means, a fit Subject to entertain you with in the House of Mourning.

But Adverfity, which caufeth the Mind to retire, and to confider, is, without peradventure, an Argument in Seafon.

And, a Fourfold Confideration, in this
day of our Adverfity, feems very proper.
I. The Greatnefs of our Lofs.
II. The Principal Cause of it.

III. The degrees of Good which

God

1

I.

God hath temper'd with this fore Evil, for the rendring of it the more fupportable. He bath fet the one over against the other.

IV. The Duty which, upon this whole matter, is required of us, to the end that our Affliction having had its due Effect, we, who, at prefent fow in Tears, may hereafter reap in Joy.

The first Confideration is, the Greatness of our Lofs.

This will appear,

1. From the Excellency of the Perfon whom God hath taken from us.

2. From fome Circumstances of Time by which that lofs is further enhaunced.

1. The Greatness of our Lofs appears from the Excellency of that Perfon whom the Goodness and Juftice of God (towards Her Goodness, but Justice towards us) bas taken away.
