SECTION IV.

OF THE TRINITY.

[ocr errors]

IN the former section have been set forth the nature and attributes of the Deity,-that there is but one living and true God.' And in unity of this Godhead there be three Persons, of one substance, power, and eternity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost". And in this Trinity none is afore or after other; none is greater or less than another; but the whole three Persons are co-eternal together, and co-equal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost: uncreate, incomprehensible, eternal, and almighty. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord; and yet not three Lords, but one Lord. The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God; and yet they are not three Gods, but one God: the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal ** Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we

Almighty and everlasting God, who hast given unto us, thy servants, grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity; we beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us stedfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. SECTION VI.

OF GOD, THE SON.

[ocr errors]

THE second Person of the blessed Trinity' is God the Son, Redeemer of the world 9.' He is the honourable, true, and only Son of the Father; his everlasting and only begotten Son, Jesu Christ';' begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God.' He was begotten, not made nor created, being of one substance with the Father. By Him all things were made. He is, also, the Lamb of God, who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven ",' and, 'by the operation of the Holy Ghost, was made very man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his Mother, and that without spot of sin, to make us clean from all sin ".' He took our nature upon Him",'' to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption.' He was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil, and make us the sons of God, and heirs of eternal life. For this purpose,' He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; and his kingdom shall have no end "."

O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father; that takest away the sins of the world; have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father.'

Both now and ever vouchsafe to hear us, O Christ. Graciously hear us, O Christ; graciously hear us, O Lord Christ". Amen.
