Attached is a letter that Dr. Trivelpiece sent to a number of countries which invited their participation in the SSC Project. This is a good example of how the Office of Energy Research is trying to promote international cooperation.

Dear Dr. Deyda:

The United States has embarked on an R&D program to determine the costs and other requirements for a 20 TeVx20 TeV high luminosity proton-proton collider, which has been proposed as the next logical step in high energy physics facility capability. This proposed Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) would be available for experiments by scientists from throughout the world. In that regard, it would be desirable to have some participation in this early R&D effort by scientists and engineers from those countries that are likely to be involved in the use of the facility. By such participation they would be better informed as to what form of collaboration might best suit the future interests of their colleagues. In turn, we would benefit from their contribution to our R&D efforts to develop a plan for the best possible facility at the lowest possible cost.

To this end, I am inviting you to suggest individuals who you would find advantageous to have involved in this R&D effort. There are some obvious administrative details that would need to be resolved, but I am sure these can be handled. I suggest that contact be made directly with Dr. Maury Tigner, Director of the Central Design Group (CDG) at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, regarding participation of specific individuals. I would appreciate any comments on the merits of this participation or how we might better go about establishing appropriate early collaboration in this proposed facility.

Sincerely,

Cel Trespec

Mr. FUQUA. Thank you very much for joining us this morning. We appreciate you being here. There may be some additional questions that we have for the record that we will submit to you later. Dr. TRIVELPIECE. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

Mr. FUQUA. Thank you very much.

I might say, for the benefit of the members, in looking at the witness list and looking around the room, I am reminded of a story that President Kennedy said one night when he had the Nobel Prize winners there for dinner. He said it was probably the greatest assemblage of brain power since Thomas Jefferson dined alone. [Laughter.]

I'm not sure Thomas Jefferson ever dined in this room, but we are very impressed with the people we have here today. Thank you for being here this morning, Dr. Trivelpiece.

Dr. TRIVELPIECE. Thank you.
