Afflictions-Are From God. Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee today into mine hand in the cave. 1 Sam. xxiv. 10. The mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord. They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold. Ps. lix. 3, 4. And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the Lord; what should I wait for the Lord any longer? 2 K. vi. 33. Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it? Amos iii. 6. The Lord's voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it. Mic. vi. 9.

In Them, We Have Only To Do With God. it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. Gen. xlv. 8. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? Jo. xviii. 11. When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only. Job xxxiv. 29. I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it. Ps. xxxix. 9. The Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord. Job i. 12.

Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job i 20, 21.

Are Covenant Blessings. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Jas. i. 2, 3. Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are par

takers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 1 Pet. iv. 12, 13. For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the Captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Heb. ii. 10. The trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise, and honour, and glory, at the appearing of Jesus Christ. 1 Pet. i. 7. I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin. Isa. i. 25. All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 2 Tim. iii. 12. We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Acts xiv. 22. The Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel. For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. Acts ix. 15, 16. No man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundred-fold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. Mar. x. 29, 30. God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart. 2 Chro. xxxii. 31. Thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord, doth man live. Deu. viii. 2, 3. I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths. And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now. Hos. ii, 6, 7. For even hereunto were ye called: because

Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. 1 Pet. ii. 21.

Furnace Of. I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. Isa. xlviii. 10. I will gather you, and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof. As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the Lord have poured out my fury upon you. Ezek. xxii. 21, 22. And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. Rev. i. 15.

How Sustained Under. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Ps. cxix. 11. I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness. Mic. vii. 9. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? Jo. xviii. 11. Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God. Ps. xxxviii. 14, 15. And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the Lord hath bidden him. It may be that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this day. 2 Sam. xvi. 11, 12.

Are Not Willingly Sent. He doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men. Lam. iii. 33. As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live : turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ezek. xxxiii. 11. He for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Heb. xii. 10. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. Isa. xlii. 3.

Age-Respect For. The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness. Pro.

xvi. 31. The beauty of old men is the gray head. Prov. xx. 29. Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man. Lev. xix. 32.

Alliance-With God's Enemies Is Forbidden. Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. Ex. xxiii. 32. Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. Deu. vii. 3. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Cor. vi. 14. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing. 2 Cor. vi. 17. My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. Pro. i. 10. My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path. Prov. i. 15. Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Ephes. v. 11.

All-Sufficiency Of Grace, God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having allsufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. 2 Cor. ix. 8. My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Phil. iv. 19.

All-Diligence. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Prov. iv. 23. And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge. 2 Pet. i. 5. Wherefore the

rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. 2 Pet. i. 10. Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. 2 Cor. viii. 7. When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him. Lu. xii. 58.

Amusements and Pleasures Of The World -Effect Of Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! And the harp,

and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands. Is. v. 11, 12. And that which fell among thorns, are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares, and riches, and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. Lu. viii. 14. Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness. Prov. xiv. 13. He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man : he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. Prov. xxi. 17. They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? Job xxi. 13, 14, 15. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. Eccles. ix. 10.

Angels-Protection Of For he shall give his Angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Ps. xci. 11. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Ps. xxxiv. 7. He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee. Lu. iv. 10. In heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Matt. xviii. 10. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? Heb. i. 14.

Angels-When They Are With Us. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Ps. xci. 11. He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee. Lu. iv. 10. And the Lord said, They will deliver thee up. 1 Sam. xxiii. 12.

Anger-Its character and tendency. cruel, and anger is outrageous. Pro. xxvii. 4. man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. Prov. xxix. 22. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Ecc. vii. 9. For in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they digged down a wall. Gen. xlix. 6.
