PROVERBS II. 3-6.

PREFACE.

THE Sermons contained in this Volume were all preached extempore; and almost every vestige of them would have perished, but for the patient and laborious kindness of a friend, who preserved them in short-hand at the time of their delivery, with a fidelity to which all who heard them will bear ready and confident testimony. To this friend all who loved and valued the Author of these Sermons are under inexpressible obligations. He has enabled them to set before their minds, even at this distance of time, not only the substance of his teaching, but his very manner, voice, and language, with a vividness of recollection which no other memorial of him could ever have supplied.

The Discourses here given are but a few out of the whole number thus preserved. They were preached towards the close of the Author's ministry; the last two in the Volume, on the Sunday before his fatal illness began, and within a fortnight of its termination. They are his dying testimony; a record of those principles, and of those views of the truth of God, which gave him in life so

a Mr. Edward Bankart, of Leicester; to whom a like acknowledgment has been made, although not by name, on former occasions. See Preface to Eight Sermons on the Eleventh Chapter of St. Matthew's Gospel, by the same Author.
