PREFACE.

The number of strangers who are constantly settling in Manchester, to say nothing of the concourse of occasional visiters, afford an apology sufficient for offering to the public attention, what has long been wanted-a MANCHESTER GUIDE briefly describing the public buildings, charities, &c. which are most worthy of notice, and affording the outlines of the history of a place which has become of so much cominercial and national consequence.

The author of the following attempt to supply the acknowledged deficiency, pretends to no refinement of language, or elegance of diction; he does not presume to rank himself as a writer of history; he simply offers himself as a guide. The moment on which the design presented itself to his view, he sat down,
