HE EDITOR feels it incumbent upon him to make this public acknowledgeIment for the favors received from his first Subscribers, it being chiefly owing to their affiftance that this work hath at length made its appearance. He is no lefs fenfible, that it becomes him to account for the additional price of the book, this would not have taken place had the Editor found it prudent to adopt his original intention of publishing it for himself; but the very heavy rife upon paper fince his first Propofals, and the great expence of printing, rendering it a matter of too much confequence for him to hazard; rather than his friends fhould be disappointed, he has prefented the copy, and all his interest in it, to his bookfeller; the Editor cannot refrain expreffing his most earnest wish, that, at a time. which requires fuch manifeft reformation in the most important concerns of mankind, a work, in a manner fo peculiarly adapted to that purpose, may meet with all due encouragement.

[blocks in formation]

That his firft fubfcription was not so extensive as might have been expected, he attributes entirely to the inconvenience of his very retired fituation, which prevented the exertions neceffary to obtain a larger teftimony of particular patronage; but that he had reafon for the most fanguine hopes in the beginning, is evident from the return of names obtained by a fingle ac quaintance, whose list amounted to nearly a third of the whole number.-This circunftance the Editor thinks it proper to record, as a bounden tribute to the memory of a moft worthy character, and valuable friend *, whofe zeal in the cause, and anxiety for the Editor's fuccefs in it, deferve both praise, and grateful remembrance.

HINXWORTH, HERTS,
January 1, 1795.

The late reverend Robert Dingley, rector of Beaumont, Effex,-a man deservedly beloved and refpected by all whe had the honor and pleasure of his acquaintance.
