my covenant be broken with David my fervant, that he should not have a fon to reign upon "his throne; and with the LEVITES the PRIESTS, "my minifters. As the hoft of heaven cannot be num"bered, neither the fand of the fea measured: fo will "I multiply the feed of David my fervant, and the "LEVITES that minifter unto me. Moreover the

"word of JEHOVAH came unto Jeremiah, faying, "Confidereft thou not what this people have fpoken, "faying, The two families which JEHOVAH hath "chofen, he hath even CAST THEM OFF? Thus "they have DESPISED MY PEOPLE, that they "fhould be no more a NATION before them. "Thus faith JEHOVAH; If my covenant be not

with day and night, and if I have not appointed "the ordinances of heaven and earth; then will I "caft away the feed of Jacob, and David my fer❝vant, so that I will not take any of his feed to be "rulers over the feed of Abraham, Ifaac, and Ja

cob: for I will caufe their captivity to return, and "have mercy on them." Jere. xxxi. 37. xxxiii. 17-26.

Quietness and ferenity are great helps to ferious meditation. The Jews in this land, before the Miffionary Society adopted their unadvised measures towards them, were in a state of quietnefs and serenity; and as we have had occafion (in extracting from Scripture the fteps ordained for them to take, previous to their restoration) to obferve that quiet meditation upon the good and evil that their nation hath experienced, is the very firft ftep they are to Hh

take;

take; ardently do I hope that the Miffionary and London Societies will abandon their unadvised proceedings, and leave them in poffeffion of that ferenity which, as British fubjects, by the laws of this land it is their right to enjoy.

If, however, they cannot find it in their hearts to leave them alone, let them confess to them that they do not justify, but fincerely repent of the evil actions, the very cruel conduct of those who have profeffed the Chriftian religion in former times towards them. Let them by their kind and refpectful demeanour, endeavour to obliterate the remembrance of that uneafinefs their unadvised proceedings have occafioned. Let them leave them in the undisturbed poffeffion of their religious privileges, and confider them as they are, THEIR FELLOW SUBJECTS; protected by the fame laws, entitled to the fame rights; and under the fame mild government as themselves. In this light it is poffible that Chriftians may be bleffed to be of fervice to them; but let them not aft under mifapprehenfion. It is a base calumny that the French philofophers have circulated, that the Jewish nation are far behind the nations in which they are fcattered, with refpect to intellectual improvement; on the contrary, the employments in which they are engaged; the fituations they fill in Turkey, in Barbary, and in fact in almoft all the nations, prove that they are perfeveringly induftrious, and of quick apprehenfion: but notwithstanding there is no people fuperior to them in point of capacity, it is poffible that they may be expofed to many inconveniences

veniences that their fellow fubjects are not. How many noble inftitutions are there in this country, that a due obfervance of their peculiar ordinances precludes them from partaking of, in common with their fellow fubjects. The law of the land vefts a power in our church-wardens and overfeers of the poor, to make rates for the relief of OUR poor, but no fuch power is poffeffed by the rabbies and rulers of the fynagogue, as to the maintenance of THEIR poor. They pay, they are required by law to pay for the maintenance of our poor; fhall we not then fuffer our minds to confider that they have poor among them as well as we; furely it ill fuits the generofity of Britons to permit them to do this without adminiftering to the neceffities of their poor. If the Miffionary and London Societies are anxious that the rifing generation among the Jews fhould poffefs the same advantages as our poor poffefs in our numerous ward and parifh fchools, what hinders them to exert themselves in fuch a way as would be wholly unobjectionable. If the mafters and miftreffes were of the Jewish nation, appointed by and under the control of the rabbies and rulers of the fynagogue, all fufpicion of undue influence would be removed. There is, I am perfuaded, no act of piety that can be performed by a Chriftian, more acceptable to God, than adminiftering to the neceffities and comfort of the Jewish nation.

When MESSIAH Cometh to the deliverance of Ifrael his people, then will that promise be accomplifhed: "And JEHOVAH thy God will circumcife

"thine heart, and the heart of thy feed; to love. "JEHOVAH thy God, with ALL THINE HEART "and with ALL THY SOUL, that thou mayest. "live." Deut. xxx. 6. Or, as it is expreffed in the Book of Jeremiah the prophet, "Behold the days "come, faith JEHOVAH, that I will make a new "covenant with the house of Ifrael, and with the "houfe of Judah: not according to the covenant "that I made with their fathers in the day that I "took them by the hand to bring them out of the "land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, "although I was an husband unto them, faith JE66 HOVAH: but this fhall be the covenant that I will "make with the houfe of Ifrael; After thofe days, "faith JEHOVAH, I will put MY LAW in their "INWARD PARTS, and write it in THEIR "HEARTS; and WILL BE their God, and they "fhall be my people. And they fhall teach no

more every man his neighbour, and every man his "brother, faying, KNOW THE JEHOVAH; for they "fhall ALL know me, from the leaft of them unto "the greatest of them, faith JEHOVAH: for I will "forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their "fin no more." Jere. xxxi. 31-34. What is that LAW which will thus be written in their hearts? Even the law of JEHOVAH their God, which he gave to their fathers by the hand of Mofes his fervant! But when MESSIAH cometh, it will also be to reward those of the nations who have kindly cherished and administered to the neceffities of Ifrael his people, in the days of their adverfity. These will have cause to rejoice

rejoice in the prospect of the restoration of the Jewish nation; for thefe are the concluding words of the Song of Mofes the fervant of God: "REJOICE, "O YE NATIONS, with HIS people: for HE "will avenge the blood of HIS fervants, and will "render vengeance to HIS adverfaries, and will be "merciful unto HIS land, and to HIS people." Deut. xxxii. 43.

It is only upon those of the nations that HATE, and have PERSECUTED Ifrael, that this vengeance will be poured when MESSIAH comes to their deliverance: "JEHOVAH THY GOD will put all these "curfes upon THINE ENEMIES, and on them " that HATE thee, which PERSECUTED thee." Deut. xxx. 7. It is the nations that come against Jerufalem that he will, in that day, feek to deftroy, Zech. xii. 9. These are they to whom he will make Jerufalem to become a CUP OF TREMBLING. These are they to whom he will make Jerufalem to become a BURDENSOME STONE. These are they to whom he will make the governors of Judah to become like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a fheaf, Zech. xii. 2, 3, 6. "Though thou exalt thyfelf as the eagle, and though "thou fet thy neft among the ftars, thence will I "bring thee down, faith JEHOVAH," concerning Edom." For thy violence against thy brother "Jacob fhame fhall cover thee, and thou fhalt be "cut off for ever, in the day that thou ftoodest on "the other fide, in the day that the ftrangers carried "away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into
