The wind bloweth where it lifteth, and thou hearest the found thereof, but canft not tell whence it "cometh, and whither it goeth: fo is every one that is born of the Spirit." John iii. 5-8.

If we compare this meffage concerning Ifrael, which will affuredly in God's due time be delivered unto the nations, with the 37th chapter of Ezekiel, we fhall have reafon to obferve the exact agreement there is between them: "EPHRAIM, and all (or the whole) house of Ifrael his companions,” ver. 16. or as it is in verfe 19, Ephraim and the tribes of Ifrael his fellows," are as it were dead and loft, not only to their brethren of Judah, but to the world at large; they are scattered into corners, and the remembrance of them hath almost ceased from among men, Deut. xxxii. 26. they have become as DRY BONES; but though the remembrance of them hath almoft ceafed from among men, yet they are not forgotten of God: Can a woman "forget her fucking child, that she should not have "compaffion on the fon of her womb? Yea, they 66 may forget, yet will I not forget thee," faith the Lord. "Behold I have graven thee upon the PALMS "OF MY HANDS." Ifa. xlix. 15, 16. Thefe dry bones are the whole houfe of Ifrael, even

Ephraim, and all the house of Ifrael his com"panions."-" Ephraim, and the tribes of Ifrael his fellows." Ezek. xxxvii. 16, 19.

"The hand of JEHOVAH was upon me, and car❝ried me out in the fpirit of JEHOVAH, and fet me

down in the midft of the valley which was full of

"bones,

"bones, and caufed me to pafs by them round about; ❝ and, behold, there were very many in the open "valley; and, lo, they were very dry. And he faid ❝unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And "I answered, O Lord JEHOVAH, thou knoweft. "Again he faid unto me, Prophefy upon these "bones, and fay unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the "word of JEHOVAH. Thus faith the Lord JEHO"VAH unto these bones; Behold, I will caufe breath "to enter into you, and ye fhall live and I will "lay finews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon

you, and cover you with fkin, and put breath in you, and ye fhall live; and ye fhall know that I am JEHOVAH. So I prophefied as I was commanded: and as I prophefied, there was a noise, and behold a fhaking, and the bones came together, "bone to his bone. And when I beheld, lo, the

finews and the flesh came up upon them, and the fkin covered them above: but there was no breath "in them. Then faid he unto me, Prophefy unto "the wind, prophefy, fon of man, and fay to the

wind, Thus faith the Lord JEHOVAH; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these flain, that they may live. So I prophefied as he "commanded me, and the breath came into them,

"and they lived, and ftood up upon their feet, an "exceeding great army. Then he faid unto me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of

Ifrael: behold, they fay, Our bones are dried, and our hope is loft: we are cut off for our parts. "Therefore prophefy and fay unto them, Thus faith

that I JEHOVAH have spoken it, and performed it, "faith JEHOVAH." Ezek. xxxvii. 1—14.

In an ESSAY ON THE PROPAGATION OF THE GOSPEL, BY CHARLES CRAWFORD, ESQ. (NOW EARL OF CRAWFORD AND LINDSAY) there are

numerous facts and arguments adduced to prove "that many of the Indians in America, are defcended

from the ten tribes." This Effay was printed in Philadelphia, in 1801, and well deferves the ferious attention of the Miffionary Society, and all who wish well to the miffionary caufe; he quotes numerous authorities, and proves that many of their cuftoms are of Hebrew derivation; and that though they have no books among them, yet that they have a tradition that their forefathers had books to read. It is a moft remarkable circumstance that it is chiefly in those nations, in which there is good reason to believe that "Ephraim, and the tribes of Ifrael his fellows," refide, that the Gospel hath not as yet been preached; and I must profess my opinion, that the reason why a door hath not yet been opened for its admiffion unto these nations, hath been that Chriftians have not been properly qualified to preach the Gospel to them. The

great

great antichriftian error, that the Mofaic difpenfation is at an end, and that the Jews are no longer bound to obey those laws which were given by the Almighty to their fathers, by the hand of Mofes his fervant, hath I think been the bar. If this bar was removed, and Christians were difpofed to fubmit to proceed in the way pointed out in God's most holy word, I am perfuaded that he that is holy, he that is true, he "that hath the key of David, he that openeth and no 66 man fhutteth, and fhutteth and no man openeth," would fet before them an open door, that "no man ❝can fhut," Rev. iii. 7, 8. The eye of faith fhould be fixed on him. The doctrines of the schools and the doctrines of Scripture are not always in agreement; thus the late Dr. Hunter, in his fermon preached before the Miffionary Society, doubtlefs expreffed himself moft accurately, according to the doctrine of the schools, when he faid, "We presume "not to expect a miraculous interpofition," but on the contrary, thefe are the words of our bleffed Saviour, "ALL POWER is given unto me in heaven "and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach ALL

NATIONS, baptizing them in the name of the "Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: "teaching them to obferve all things whatfoever I "have commanded you: and, LO, I AM WITH “YOU ALWAY, even unto the end of the world, "Amen." Matt. xxviii. 18-20. It is he that OPENETH the door whereby those who obey this his command, are enabled to proceed with his bleffing; and it is he that SHUTS the door, when those

who

who conform not to his will endeavour to do that which is contrary to his word, and confequently dif pleafing to him; and both in opening and in fhutting he exercises his almighty MIRACULOUS power, and there is no refifting his will, or faying unto him what doest thou?

Those who are inattentive to his word, and are not inclined to believe that all power is really and actually given unto him in heaven and in earth, cannot confiftently expect his bleffing, and that he will be with them always; furely they will do well to confider these things; he to whom all power is committed in heaven and earth, when he raised Lazarus from the dead, lifted up his eyes and faid, "Father, I thank "thee that thou haft heard me. And I knew that "thou heareft me ALWAYS

but because of the

people that stand by I faid it, that they may believe "that thou haft fent me." John xi. 41, 42. And again, when he prayed in these words, "Father, glorify "thy name," there came a voice from heaven, faying, "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." And he faid, "This voice came not because of me, "but for your fakes." John xii. 28, 30. And again, when he was betrayed, he spake unto Peter, faying, "Put up again thy fword into his place: for all they "that take the fword, fhall perish with the fword. "Thinkeft thou that I cannot now PRAY TO MY "FATHER, and he fhall presently give me more "than twelve legions of angels? But how then "fhall the Scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must "be?"
