To the FATHER lauds unending,
To the SON and SPIRIT Blest,
Still from aye to aye ascending,

Be thronghout all worlds addrest.

"The LORD is my Light, whom then shall I fear "

31 0 Unity of Threefold Light,

Send out Thy loveliest ray;

And scatter our transgressions night,
And turn it into day!

Make us those temples, pure and fair,
Thy glory loveth well,

The spotless tabernacles, where

Thou may'st vouchsafe to dwell!

The glorious hosts of peerless night
That ever see Thy face,

Thou mak'st the mirrors of Thy Light,
The vessels of Thy grace :

Thou, when their wond'rous strain they weave,

Hast pleasure in the lay:

Deign thus our praises to receive,

Albeit from lips of clay!

And yet Thyself they cannot know,

Nor pierce the veil of light

That hides Thee from the thrones below,

As in profoundest night :

How then can mortal accents frame

Due tribute to their King?

Thou, only, while we praise Thy name,
Forgive us as we sing!

On the pathway rough and steep
Through this weary wilderness.
Holy JESU, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way.

There are stony ways to tread;

Give the strength we sorely lack:
There are tangled paths to tread ;-
Light us, lest we miss the track.
Holy JESU, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way.

There are sandy wastes that lie
Cold and sunless, vast and drear,
Where the feeble faint and die;
Grant us grace to persevere.
Holy JESU, day by day,
Lead us in the narrow way.

There are soft and flowery glades
Decked with golden-fruited trees,
Sunny slopes and scented shades :-
Keep us, Lord, from slothful ease.
Holy JESU, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way.

Upward still to purer heights,
Onward yet to scenes more blest,
Calmer regions, clearer lights,

Till we reach the promised rest.

Holy JESU, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way. Amen.

THE night is closing o'er us,

And shadows stalk abroad;

With hymns then and with anthems,

Give we ourselves to GOD.

And Thou! O Sun of Angels,
Watch o'er us from above;
Fain would our eyes behold Thee,
Fain would our hearts still love.

True light shine forth, let darkness
Far from our souls be thrust;
That peace to all flow richly,

Who Thee their SAVIOUR trust.

And when as judge Thou sittest,
In robes of light arrayed,
We all may joy before Thee,
Untroubled, undismayed.

To Thee be praise, LORD JESU,
Sun of the Angel host;

With GOD the eternal FATHER,

And God the HOLY GHOST.

Amen.

"His mercies fail not."

HEAR our prayer, O Heavenly Father,
Ere we lay us down to sleep;
Bid Thine Angels, pure and holy,
Round our bed their vigils keep.

Our sins are heavy, but Thy mercy
Far outweighs them every one;
Down before the Cross we cast them,
Trusting in Thy help alone.

Keep us through this night of peril
Underneath its boundless shade;
Take us to Thy rest, we pray Thee,
When our pilgrimage is made.

None can measure out Thy patience
By the span of human thought

None can bound the tender mercies
Which Thy Holy Son has bought.

Pardon all our past transgressions,
Give us strength for days to come;
Guide and guard us with Thy blessing
Till Thine Angels bid us home.

"Thou art about my path and about my bed."

All thanks, O LORD, to Thee!

I pray Thee now, that sinless
The hours of dark may be

O JESU! keep me in Thy sight,

And save me through the coming night!

The joys of day are over :

I lift my heart to Thee;
And ask Thee, that offenceless
The hours of dark may be.

O JESU! make their darkness light,
And save me through the coming night!

The toils of day are over :

I raise the hymn to Thee :
And ask that free from peril
The hours of dark may be.
O JESU! keep me in Thy sight,

And guard me through the coming night!

Lighten mine eyes, O SAVIOUR,

Or sleep in death shall I ;
And he, my wakeful tempter,
Triumphantly shall cry:

"He could not make their darkness light,
Nor guard them through the hours of night!"

Be Thou my soul's preserver,

O GOD! for Thou dost know

How many are the perils

Through which I have to go:

LOVER OF MEN! O hear my call,

And guard and save me from them all! Amen.

Saturday Evening.

"And on the Seventh day GOD rested from all His work which He had made."

O WHAT their joy and their glory must be,—
Those endless Sabbaths the blessed ones see!
Crown for the valiant: to weary ones rest:
GOD shall be all, and in all ever blest.

What are the Monarch, His Court, and His throne?
What are the peace and the joy that they own?
Tell us, ye blest ones, that in it have share,
If what ye feel ye can fully declare.

Truly "Jerusalem" name we that shore,
"Vision of Peace" that brings joy evermore !
Wish and fulfilment can sever'd be ne'er;
Nor the thing pray'd for come short of the prayer.

We, where no trouble distraction can bring,
Safely the anthems of Sion shall sing:

While for Thy grace, LORD, their voices of praise
Thy blessed people shall evermore raise.

Now in the meanwhile, with hearts raised on high,
We for that country must yearn and must sigh:
Seeking Jerusalem, dear native land,
Through our long exile on Babylon's strand.

Low before Him with our praises we fall,

Of Whom, and in Whom, and through Whom are all : Of Whom-the FATHER; and in Whom-the SON: Through Whom- the SPIRIT, with These ever one.

Amen. Neale (tr.)
