(Vols. sold separately.) The “History of the English People” no longer wears the modest guise of a school-book. It has become a book of stately appearance. Though the materials of the earlier book have been worked into it, and though we recognize many of the most brilliant passages as old friends, still the arrangement is so altered, and the amount of fresh matter is so large, that it is substantially a new work.Saturday Review, London.

With Colored Maps and Tables. 8vo, Cloth, $1 20. “The object of the book, that of combining the history of the people with the history of the kingdom, is most successfully carried out. It gives, I think, in the main, a true and accurate picture of the general course of English history. *** As a composition, too, the book is clear, forcible, and brilliant. It is the most trnly original book of the kind that I ever saw."-Extract from Letter of EDWARD A. FREEMAN, D.C.L., LL.D., &c., &c. Green's Readings from English History.

MANUAL OF HISTORICAL LITERATURE.

A MANUAL OF HISTORICAL LITERATURE: Compris

ing Brief Descriptions of the most Important Histories in English, French, and German, together with Practical Suggestions as to Methods and Courses of Historical Study. For the Use of Students, General Readers, and Collectors of Books. By CHARLES KENDALL ADAMS, LL.D., Professor of History in the University of Michigan, Author of "Democracy and Monarchy in France.” Crown 8vo, Cloth, $2 50.

A vast amount of labor and research has gone to the making of this book, and we can hardly commend too highly the diligence, the discrimination, the justice, and the candor of the author. ... The work is in every way helpful and serviceable, and its value is enhanced by a very complete index.-Boston Journal.

Doubtless the best bibliography of historical literature now accessible in the English language. As such it will soon find a permanent place in every library. Professor Adams has compressed an extraordinary amount of information into this small compass.-Albany Times.

We cannot do other than commend Professor Adams's work to a valued place in the library. It is surprisingly full, erring, if at any point, in the mention and description of works not easily accessible and not greatly distinguishable in method from weightier authorities. - Christian Advocate, N. Y.

The work is indeed a dictionary to the most accessible and excellent sources of historical research. No student of history can afford to dispense with the help and guidance furnished by this judicious handbook.– N. Y. Herald.

The arrangement of the matter and the grouping of histories are excellent, and the introductory essays are suggestive. It is an invaluable book of reference.-N. Y. World.

His work is one that will be valued in proportion as it is used, and one that well deserves consideration from liberal patrons of literature who feel actuated to encourage works of sterling utility.-N. Y. T'imes.

It is in fact a survey of all historical literature, characterizing briefly, but clearly and comprehensively, the scope, spirit, and method of each historian, and so putting into the hands of the student or the general reader a key to the great and constantly growing mass of historical literature. -Christian Union, N. Y.

A book that will be welcomed with enthusiasm by all students of history. --Albany Sunday Press, N. Y.
