Swiftly thus our fleeting days
Bear us down life's rapid stream;
Upward, Lord, our spirits raise;
All below is but a dream.

3 Thanks for mercies past receive;
Pardon of our sins renew;
Teach us henceforth how to live
With eternity in view:

Bless thy word to young and old;
Fill us with a Saviour's love;
And when life's short tale is told,
May we dwell with thee above.

CIRCUMCISION.

32

OUBLE

"And when eight days were accomplished for the
circumcising of the Child, his name was called
Jesus."

[S. M.

THE ancient law departs

And all its terrors cease;

For Jesus makes with faithful hearts
A covenant of peace.

2 The Light of light divine,
True Brightness undefiled,
He bears for us the shame of sin,

A holy, spotless Child.

3 To-day the Name is thine,

At which we bend the knee;

They call thee Jesus Child divinal

33 None other name is given under heaven whereby

we must be saved."

JESUS! Name of wondrous love!

Name all other names above!
Unto which must every knee

Bow in deep humility.

2 Jesus! Name decreed of old:
To the maiden mother told,
Kneeling in her lowly cell,
By the angel Gabriel.

3 Jesus! Name of priceless worth
To the fallen sons of earth,
For the promise that it gave-
"Jesus shall his people save."

4 Jesus! Name of mercy mild,
Given to the holy Child,
When the cup of human woe
First he tasted here below.

5 Jesus! only Name that's given
Under all the mighty heaven,
Whereby man, to sin enslaved,
Bursts his fetters, and is saved.

6 Jesus! Name of wondrous love!
Human Name of God above;
Pleading only this we flee,

Helpless, O our God, to thee.

EPIPHANY.

34 "All the earth shall be filled with his majesty."

HAIL to the Lord's Anointed,

Great David's greater Son!

Hail, in the time appointed,
His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
To set the captive free:
To take away transgression,
And rule in equity.

2 He comes with succour speedy
To those who suffer wrong,
To help the poor and needy,
And bid the weak be strong;
To give them songs for sighing,
Their darkness turn to light,
Whose souls, condemn'd and dying,
Were precious in his sight

3 He shall descend like showers
Upon the fruitful earth;
And love and joy, like flowers,
Spring in his path to birth:
Before him, on the mountains,

Shall peace, the herald, go;

And righteousness, in fountains,

Double.

4 To him shall prayer unceasing,
And daily vows ascend;
His kingdom still increasing,
A kingdom without end:
The tide of time shall never

His covenant remove;

His name shall stand for ever;
That name to us is Love.

35 "Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God [5s. Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou

King of saints."

HOW wondrous and great

Thy works, God of praise!

How just, King of saints,
And true are thy ways!
O who shall not fear thee,
And honour thy name?
Thou only art holy,

Thou only supreme.

2 To nations long dark

Thy light shall be shown;

Their worship and vows

Shall come to thy throne:
Thy truth and thy judgments
Shall spread all abroad,
Till earth's every people
Confess thee their God.

36 "Arise, shine; for thy light is come and the glory of [10s.

the Lord is risen upon thee.”

RISE, crown'd with light, imperial Salem, rise;

Exalt thy towering head and lift thine eyes:

See heaven its sparkling portals wide display,
And break upon thee in a flood of day.

2 See a long race thy spacious courts adorn,
See future sons, and daughters yet unborn,
In crowding ranks on every side arise,
Demanding life, impatient for the skies.
3 See barbarous nations at thy gates attend,
Walk in thy light, and in thy temple bend:
See thy bright altars throng'd with prostrate kings,
While every land its joyous tribute brings.

4 The seas shall waste, the skies to smoke decay,
Rocks fall to dust, and mountains melt away;
But fix'd his word, his saving power remains;
Thy realm shall last, thy own Messiah reigns.

"We have seen his star in the East."

[P. M.

BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the morning,

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;

Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

2 Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining,

Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall;

Angels adore him in slumber reclining,

Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all.
