was possible that bitter Cup might pafs from him (which could not be granted, and the Church, his Bride, redeemed) and therefore, an Angel was sent to comfort him, Luke xxii, 4. Experienced Minifters also are commanded to watch over Christ's Flock, and build them up in their most holy Faith. Faith is the Victory whereby we overcome the World, the Flesh, and the Devil, i Peter v. 2. 1 Jobn v. 4: And thus through the atoning Merits and prevailing Conquest of ihe Captain of their Salvation, they go on conquering and to conquer, Rev. vi. 2. Thus the Lord Jesus is a Man of War, Exod. xv. 3. And appears majestic in his warlike Dress, being clothed in a Vesture dipt in Blood, and his Name is called, The Word of God; for he accomplishes the Will of God. And he hath on his Vefture, and on his Thigh, a Name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF Lords, Rev. xix. 13, 16. And also he appears by Faith to the View of his Saints and Soldiers, like unto the Son of Man, though in Glory, with a priestly Garment down to the Foot, and girt about his Paps with a golden Girdle (resembled by that of the High-priest, Exod. xxviii. 8.) His Head and Hairs white like Wool, as white as Snow. And his Eyes as a Flame of Fire. And his Feet like unto fine Brass, burned in a Furnace; and his Voice as the Sound of many Waters. And he hath in his right Hand seven Stars ; and out of his Mouth goes a sharp two-edged Sword ; and his Countenance is as the Sun shining in his Strength. And when the Saints see by Faith their Captain thus arrayed in glorious Majesty, they fall down at his Feet as dead, dead indeed to their own Ability
of obtaining Salvation without him, and prove it true that he that looseth his Life shall find it, Matt. X. 39. For immediately Christ lays his right Hand upon them, saying, “ Fear not, I am the first and the last, I am he that liveth and was dead (I died for your Sins, in your Stead) but behold! And for further Encouragement, we are exhorted to lay hold of his Strength, and confide in his Righteousness, without which we can do nothing, Isa. xxvii. 5. 2 Cor. xii. 9. Our Lord also animates his Soldiers with that heart-chearing Promise, “ To him that overcometh, I will give him to eat of the Tree of Life, which is in the Midst of the Paradise of God," Rev. ii. 7. It is true, Christians are taught to expect Tribulation, and severe Trials ; The Devil will cast some of you into Prison for a Season (God's Children are sometimes permitted to be imprisoned by Men, and sometimes by Unbelief) for the Trial of Faith, when God hides his Face: yet it is said, “ He that proves faithful unto Death (by relying and trusting on the Promises of God) shall receive a Crown of Life; and shall never be hurt (as an Unbeliever will) by the second
Death,” ver. 10, 11. Again, “ To him that holds fast my Name, and does not deny, but confess my Faith, (me the Object of Faith, according to my Testimony) even where Satan's Seat is ; I will give him to eat of the hidden Manna, and will give him a white Stone (in Token of Absolution, i. e. full Affurance of Faith) and in the Stone a new Name written, which no Man knoweth, faving he that received it, ver. 17. “ Moreover I will give him Power over the Nations, and he shall rule them with a Rod of Iron, as the Veffels of a Potter shall they be broken in Shivers,” ver. 27. (Their Errors and false Religion shall fall like Dagon; or be erushed as Nebushtan, 2 Kings xviii. 4. The Saints shall have Power delegated from Christ to judge the World; i. e. by Doctrine and Conversation on Earth, and be an especial Jury in the great Asizes in the last Day, 1 Cor. vi. 2.) " And I will give him the Morning Star," Rev. ii. 28. to guide him fafe on Earth, viz. myself, my Word, and Spirit, Rev. xxii. 16. " And he shall shine forth like the Sun in the Kingdom of my Father,” Matt. xiii. 43. I will likewise clothe him with white Raiment, and I will not blot out his Name out of the Book of Life, but I will confess his Name before my Father, and before his holy Angels, Rev. iii. 5. Heré let the despised Believer view his Happiness in having such an Advocate in the great Day of Retribution, when the Heavens and Earth shall fiee away, and the Dead both small and great shall stand before God (who is his Friend): Then shall the Books. be opened, The Book of God's Omniscience of kpowing all Things, and by his omnipotent Power will bring to the Minds of all the World every Sin they committed in Life, which were not repented of and pardoned. “When the Spirit of Truth cometh, he will convince the World
of Sin, and bring all Things to Remembrance, Jobn xvi. 8. and xiv. 26. Then shall be open'd the Book of Conscience before the Law : the Book of Sins committed under the Law; and likewise another Book of Sins committed under the Gospel : besides the Book of Life. Then shall the Dead both small and great be judged out of the Records which are written in those Books, acoording to their Works. And whosoever is not found written in the Lamb's Book of Life (as a pardoned, Sinner, who by Faith hath received a Reprieve viz. the Spirit of Adoption from the King of Sion) shall be cast into the Lake of Fire, Rev. xx. 11, 12, 13, 15.
But all Works of Faith, and Labours of Love and Patience through Hope, 1 Thef. i. 3. fhall obtain a Reward of Grace; and such shall be received with “ Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the Foundation of the World," Matt.
Then it will appear no small Privilege to have our Names written in the Book of Life, never to be blotted out. And even now our Comfort is to have a Communication with Hea. ven, by our Union with Christ, who faith, “I have set before thee an open Door," a Door of Grace, “ where thou mayest go in and out, and find Pasture” both for Soul and Body : “ For Godliness hath the Promise of this Life, as well as that which is to come," 1 Tim. iv. 8. Thy little Strength and little Faith shall never fail ; for “ I will not break the bruised Reed, nor quench the smoaking Flax” in the weak Believer, Matt. xii. 20. Buc the deceitful Heart and Tongue shall be confounded: And I will make the Children of Satan, who continually fpurn against the Interest of my Gospel, one Day worship before thy Feet; and let them know that I have loved thee, because thou hast kept the
Word of my Patience (and hast borne my Cross through great Persecutions, and severe Conflicts with Satan? I will also keep thee from the fatal Hour of Temptation (perhaps from the Luft of the Flesh, the Luft of the Eye, and the Pride of Life) by which the Devil overcometh all the World (of Unbelievers.) All the Saints crowned with Glory, and clothed in fine Linen, being the Righteousness of the Saints, and their Bodies shining like the Sun, shall then appear in such Splendor, as the Heart of Man never conceived the Glory God hath laid up for those who loved him, i Cor. ii. 9. Every Saint thus adorned fhall be set as a living Stone in the Place appointed by the eternal Wifdom of the Father, who designed from Eternity to consummate or compleat this fpiritual Tabernacle in the Church triumphant, Ye also as living Stones are built up a spiritual House, ye being a chosen Generation for that Purpose, i Peter ii. 5, 9.
